The global warming movement has taken a decidedly sinister turn.
Not content with scaring moms and dads with tales of a coming global warming apocalypse, the true believers in human-caused climate change have taken their controversial doomsday message into the classroom and onto the Internet, polluting impressionable kids with green propaganda and creating youth legions of enviro-fanatics.
Fresh from their daily “greenwashing” sessions at school, these save-the-earth converts arrive home as little inspector generals, haranguing parents for exhibiting environmentally insensitive behavior and contributing to the planet’s looming CO2 overdose.
The young Greenites, already pre-conditioned by classroom propaganda, are subjected to the same man-is-destroying-the-earth homilies on the Internet. The eco-epistles consist of the usual heart-tugging climate scare stories (e.g. polar bears are dying and ice caps are melting), which conveniently fail to mention that the earth has warmed – and cooled – naturally for billions of years and that CO2 is a life-giving atmospheric gas. In the dark and depressing world of quasi-religious eco-fanatics, there is no room for the light of truth in their save-the-earth evangelism, and kids are easy targets.
Colorado State University professor Dr. William Gray, famous for his yearly hurricane forecasts, has publicly denounced the eco-propaganda.
"We are also brainwashing our children on the warming topic,” Gray wrote in a statement to Florida Today. “We have no better example than Al Gore's alarmists and inaccurate movie, which is being shown in our schools and being hawked by warming activists with little or no meteorological-climate background.”
The effects of that propaganda effort were on display this month at the UNICEF Children’s Climate Forum in Copenhagen. During the conference, youth delegates from 44 countries issued a declaration of war on global warming, demanding that governments do something about climate change.
“Our future is at risk and we demand that something be done. The time for talk is over. Now, we hold you accountable for your commitments,” the delegates declared.
The statement continued:
“The battle against climate change is upon all of us . . . We must act immediately, and we are ready to fulfill our commitments. We are prepared to give all we have as long as there is the possibility of saving our planet. We expect the same courage from you.”
The hostile, grating tone of many of today’s young global warming converts is alarmingly similar to that of the 1930s Hitler Youth movement. In Nazi Germany, properly programmed children were encouraged to snitch on parents who questioned the tenets of the state religion. Many parents lived in fear of their own children.
Unfortunately, history has a nasty habit of repeating itself. Will the United Statres one day witness enviro-monsters at home ratting on their parents for committing carbon crimes against the state? In George Orwell’s dystopian novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four, grownups were frightened out of their wits by their own children who were programmed by Big Brother to spy for the state.
Today, children logging onto the Internet are often fed the standard sky-is-falling pitch about a looming global warming meltdown: humankind is fouling the environment, CO2 and global temperatures are rising, polar bears are dying, ice caps are melting, sea levels are rising, hurricanes are increasing, and on and on.
Apparently, not even Santa Claus will escape the harmful effects of global warming. Kids visiting the Build-A-Bear Web site soon discover that Christmas may be cancelled because of global warming.
As Maura Flynn of BigGovernment.Com writes, “When your unsuspecting tot logs on and hops a virtual train to the North Pole…you should know that he or she will be informed – by Santa Claus – that Christmas may be canceled this year due to Global Warming . . . Needless-to-say, this constitutes brainwashing on the sleaziest and most sinister level.”
The eco-indocrination also is in full swing on OneWorld.Net, where Tiki the Penguin warns young readers that “the ice of the poles is melting. Some of it already is melting fast.” (The truth: the snow pack in Greenland and Antarctica is increasing, despite some melting along Greenland’s periphery and on the Antarctic Peninsula.)
The warming will harm polar bears and penguins, “but for you people, it will be much worse,” Tiki predicts.
“For a start, all the ice that melts will start to fill up the oceans and make them overflow on land. And the water itself will take up more space simply because it is warmer. That will make it overflow even more onto the land.”
Nickelodeon has joined in the climate scaremongering with the launch of its Big Green Help Web site, which urges kids to “team up” with their “favorite Nicktoons to battle CO2 monsters in 3-D.”
After they’ve finished dispatching earth’s CO2 enemies, the victorious gamers are asked to sign a pledge “to reduce CO2 emissions in the real world.” Some of the suggested ways to cut their carbon footprint: travel by foot, bike or skateboard instead of by car at least four miles each week, remind parents to turn off the engine when waiting in the car, and tell mom and dad to keep the car tires properly inflated.
The incessant eco-nagging – called “pester power” – is driving many parents bonkers. As the New York Times reported, “Grown-ups sometimes end up feeling like scofflaws under the watchful eye of the pint-size eco-police, whose demands grow ever greater, and more expensive.”
Brigades of child spies are also hard at work pestering parents in Britain, where energy giant NPower has invested heavily in advertising “Climate Cops,” a genuinely Orwellian campaign that urges children to enlist as climate cops and build climate-crime case files on their family, friends from school, and even aunts and uncles.
Some of the offenses: not turning off lights, turning on the wrong type of lights (those with incandescent bulbs), using tumble dryers, leaving a door open and leaving a mobile phone charger plugged in.
“You should report back to your family to make sure they don’t commit those [climate] crimes again (or else!),” warns one of NPower’s Climate Cop ads. “You may need to keep a watchful eye on them by revisiting the case every week or two to make sure they don’t slip back into their old habits.”
The pestering appears to get more combative with age. In one Greenpeace ad (“Join the Energy Revolution”), the radical nature of the greenwashed mind is on full display as a hooded true-believer delivers his fire-and-brimstone sermon in a commanding, often threatening, tone.
“If drastic measures aren’t taken soon,” he warns, “by the time I grow up, there won’t be any fish left in the sea . . . polar ice caps will be gone, oceans will rise, entire countries will disappear. Starting today, the lines are drawn . . . either you’re for my future, or you’re against it. You’re a friend or an enemy.”
He then concludes his dour scolding with this menacing pledge: “I may just be a kid today, but tomorrow it will be different. You had your chance to fix this problem, now we have ours. This is the last I will be talking to you adults. We won’t be cute, we won’t be patronized, we won’t be denied our future.”
The anti-capitalist theme of the propaganda assault on children is unmistakable. Corrupted by its anti-technology ideology, eco-movement Luddites seem bent on saving earth from the ravages of mankind by undoing the last 250 years of industrial progress. It is not clear which of their battles is more important: fighting global warming or ridding the planet of their archenemy – capitalism.
The green architects behind the anti-global warming campaign seem hell-bent on “reversing the industrial revolution,” says columnist and blogger David Huntwork.
“The next generation is being taught that the methods used to produce electricity is [sic] evil, the internal combustion engine is evil, the gas you put in your car and the oil used to make it are evil, plastic is evil, styrofoam is evil, cutting down trees to manufacture paper or lumber is evil, industry and manufacturing is evil, corporations are evil, flying in an airplane is evil, mowing your yard is evil, and that producing another generation of consumers and polluters is evil. The list goes on and on.”

My niece's daughter goes to a private school here in Australia. She was given an assignment by her teacher to provide an essay confirming the effects of Global Warming on the Great Barrier Reef. The problem was that the Internet Research was showing that there were no effects. The Great Barrier Reef has never been as healthy as it is now (confirmed by the body that monitors the GBR). The teacher was told this and subsequently told this 13 yo impressionable child that any answer different to confirming the erosion of the GBR by Global Warming would be considered a fail. In Australia the curriculum is decided by our Government leaders, so it seems that schools are also in fear of losing their funding if they don't tow the political line. It is time for the politicians to pull their heads in and provide balanced views on Earth's weather, instead of continuing this farce.

I am an environmental science teacher of 29 years. So, high school kids shouldn't be educated on deforestation? Species Loss? Shouldn't they be fluent in ecological sciences so they may make sound and scientifically based decisions?

A quick google of "great barrier reef" and "climate change" reveals a huge host of well documented evidence that climate change is a massive threat to the GBR - just try it yourself. What you mean is the child came home and was TOLD that climate change will not affect the GBR. My children are past the stages mentioned in this article but I'll tell you exactly what I would do if they tried any "environmental policing" on me: I would say fine... let's see what no carbon footprint is really like. I would give them one weeks punishment with no TV, no rides to school, no rides to friend's houses, no going to friend's houses (as that would be participating in their carbon usage), no air conditioning or heat (whatever the case may be), no hot showers, no computer, no internet, no video games, no hot food, no cold food, no food they didn't produce with their own two hands (food production takes carbon), no lights after dark, no clothes they didn't wash with their own hands (in cold water of course), they can dig a hole to use for toilette facilities (sewage processing takes carbon), no toilette paper (double bad - use of trees and carbon to produce and ship). I could go on and on and on. I guarantee within ONE WEEK I would never hear another word on the subject.
The comment about the "carbon footprint" is sheer nonsense. No one says...especially me...that technology is bad. Not at all. Yet, any technology that has greater downsides than upsides: should be changed? CFCs, chlordane, Agent Orange...for examples.
Maybe your children are thinking about their futures as well. What a concept. As I have said many times...show me one ecosystem on earth not in decline? Tell your children about the loss of 1/4 of all mammals...15% of all plants. For what? More malls? More materialism? Thank you for this article. So many of these commenters have bought the AGW nonsense hook, line and sinker, obviously without thinking. No, CO2 does not harm the great barrier reef, when it was formed the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere was many times what it is now. No CO2 is not a pollutant, nothing that is essential to life on earth could be called a pollutant. No, CO2 will not cause the oceans to become acidic, all of the CO2 in all of the fuel on earth is not enough to make the oceans acidic. It will only be a very short time till the claims that CO2 is causing any harm will be brought to court, and then courts will inevitably rule that it is not, the claims are so flimsy as to be laughable.

You have no idea of the benefits of CO2 on this planet. So what if the polar ice melts? More fresh water for harvesting, no rise, since most polar ice floats.
Antarctic plains, most of Antarctica have an AVG temp of -40C.. may take a while to raise that avg so ice melts. Temp on the perimeter rises to about -10C on avg, and that is the furthest portion towards the equator. AGW is a myth, so why would you believe? A fraction of a degree over a hundred years, which is all we are talking about, factually, not fictionally as presented by AGW, would mean nothing. In fact, as the next 'ice age' approaches, you'd be happy to have some way to warm our planet, but that is futile.

Exactly how old are you? You can't be serious. Carbon madness. Okay. Let's see. What percentage of the human body is actually carbon? Oxygen is 62.81% and Carbon is 19.37 (almost 20%). Where do you think the carbon in your body comes from? How did it get in there? There are so many connections that are essential to life that are NOT being promoted, it is sickening.

S1P; We know a stable level of CO2 is 280 parts per million, today it stands at 380 ppm. A point worth remembering is that as the Earth warms from CO2 it will release Methane from the permafrost. Methane is 25 times more powerful than CO2 and would be a tipping point for our weather system.
Rise is sea levels is not caused by sea ice melting as you rightly point out. However sea rise is caused by the thermal expansion of water, i.e. the volume of water expands through heating.
Antarctica will indeed take a long time to melt however we have lost over 30% of ice in the artic by 2007 and we may have an ice free North pole by 2015!
The only people who will benefit from climate change denial are the share holders of big multinational fossil fuel companies and carbon intensive business. Peer reviewed scientists have nothing to gain from warning people about the dangers we face.

We are all being sold a bill of goods by groups of people who believe that humans can’t help but be bad for the planet. That may or not be true, but CO2 is not causing any problems. Yes, CO2 is a greenhouse gas, but it is already causing almost all the warming it can. We are not on a precipice, the Earth has been much warmer in the past, and life on earth thrived, including Polar Bears, which, by the way are so populous now that you can get licenses to hunt them in order to curtail their population.

Consider the many hominid species that have walked the Earth and the fact that homosapiens is the only one left. All others were gone long before the industrial age. No. You would be putting more water vapor from your breath in the jar, as you have more water vapor than CO2 in your exhaling... we don't exhale concentrated CO2. Perhaps you should try another experiment and include all the variables.
CO2 will also put out a flame in great concentrations, but in the real world, on planet earth, that doesn't happen too often in nature or we couldn't build our fires. More variables...
CO2 absords a tiny spectrum of IR... it does not hold it for very long as it interacts with other molecules in nature releasing the 'stored' heat.
The statement about extinction proves why we need "science" based ecological education. Science is not soundbytes. Yes...extinction is a natural process. Yet, even the non-science educated person should know that current rates are 1000-10,000x faster! Massive habitat destruction is not natural and species are having little time to evolve. We are we in such a state of denial about deforestation or extinction or global warming? As an "intelligent species" shouldn't we have an eye towards a future that is good for our children?
I hope climate change is not real...yet, as a marine science teacher...I see ocean pH dropping and real glacial loss around the planet. The precautionary principle is all I suggest. Dead zones off our coast are not fertilizer related. They are current related: another possible outcome of global climate change. It is better to stop name calling and discuss real science. Our kids depend on that.

Conspiracies DO exist and have existed; most are under the guise of something 'needed' (or said to be), of course. All the while, the motivation is NOT the superficial.
Again, you ask 'why?'... Do the research and start with how much money will be made. Oil is NOT the enemy, for oil is an investor in 'green'. Also, you might ask many other questions, like HOW did you come to your 'belief'? Why does the planetary history proving AGW is false and is contrary to life NOT factor into your decision? And, perhaps, why would you FEAR a warmer planet?
I would ask (the UN) where the 100,000 dead from SWINE FLU are buried, since we just spent several billion dollars in a flurry of FEAR? It happens.
Lastly, Victor, I'd like you to read two books that will, hopefully open your eyes:
Ed Bernays' "Propaganda"... he is the 'father' of PR/Manipulation and was used by govs/corps/movie stars, etc., for one purpose... to manipulate the masses. He was an insider to our gov, not an outsider.

If you read through the first one, the first few pages tell it all, but you should continue. The second one is, imo, happening today. As I read it, I couldn't help but shake my head in disgust... it is happening and has happened. The masses, especially with TV/MSM are so easily manipulated, it is not hard for me to see how so many 'believe'.
I seriously hope you give these books a glance. You can find them online in PDF for free. They don't speak of AGW, but they do answer your question as to 'Why'?

Why would such a prestigious group of scientists want to mislead the population of this planet, it makes no sense. I would like to refer you to the unbiased findings of the British Metrological Office and the British Royal society both of whom say man made climate change is irrefutable.

All it takes is one to invalidate that statement you provided. AGW MUST be proved, not disproved, by the way.

KDK: As much as I agree with you about media manipulation of the masses the weight of scientific evidence for man made climate change is now overwhelming. The Swedish scientist Svante Arrhenius warned as long ago as 1896 that fossil consumption could lead to the planet warming, this is not a newly invented idea.
As for your comments that the IPCC are simply driven by money, it is a sad reflection on society that you believe this. It is possible for people not to be driven by finance.
As for the oil companies greening the planet, I'm astounded by that remark, the opposite is true, they and the coal industry caused the problem in the first place! I suspect you could be on their payrole.

This article is ridiculous. You call this news? Try examining some real facts instead of putting a hostile spin on the admirable efforts of children to serve as environmental stewards. You are comparing children to Nazis, Orwellian doomsday prophets, and Luddites? I think that's a little over the top. Why don't you examine your own behavior and ask why you are so threatened by the exhortations of kids? Even if you deny the evidence of human-caused global warming, it's plain common sense to turn of the lights when you leave a room and close doors to keep the heat in. It's energy saving, stupid. It reduces your electric and heating bill. Surely you can't oppose saving yourself a buck? I'm sure you probably published this article just to provoke this type of reader-response, but I am deeply disillusioned that journalist integrity didn't compel you to take a more objective look at both sides of the story before publishing this drivel.
