A science teacher since 1971, Hurd's 1976 Anthropology doctorate was earned from the University of California, Irvine. He was next a chemist, a medical researcher and professor of psychiatry. Hurd returned in 1986 to his first love, archaeology. He received honors for teaching, involving dozens of undergraduate students in published research.
