Power walker on track to break Guinness World Record

“You are never too young to start something new. Challenge yourself, set goals, and dream big! My forties were fabulous and my fifties are amazing,” says power walker Yolanda Holder. Holder is trying to break the Guinness World Record for the Most Marathons Run in a Calendar Year.

In 2008, Holder wanted to do something different for her 50th birthday. She set out to do 50 marathons in 50 weeks. She ended up doing 65 marathons and becoming 2008’s Marathon Maniac of the Year. Last year, she did 77 marathons and became 2009’s Marathon Maniac of the Year. So, this year she decided to go for the world record and finish 101 marathons in one year.

So what does a marathon maniac eat and wear? “I eat normal but a few days before the weekend I eat pasta, veggies, and lots of fruit,” says Holder. On her feet, she wears New Balance trail and road shoes plus ECO Power Socks by Burlington. This combo keeps her feet blister free.

Currently, Holder does about two to three marathons every weekend. That works out to be 8 to 11 marathons each month. “I have my first quad Labor Day weekend. That’s 4 marathons in 4 states in 3 days. Wish me luck!”

You can also cheer on Holder at her 72nd marathon when she competes right here in Nevada. Holder plans to run in the Extraterrestrial Full Moon Midnight Marathon in Rachel on August 21. “I love Calico Racing’s events. The race director puts on unique races and she’s walker friendly. This will be my 3rd ET Marathon.”

Holder will also make another stop in Nevada when she officially breaks the Guinness World Record on December 5, 2010, at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon.
