Due to a unique election law in Sweden, TRH Princess Madeleine and Prince Daniel have been nominated for election to parliament. They have been nominated without their knowledge or consent, but it is perfectly legal. The party doing the nominating is the National Householder Party, whose main platform is the abolition of all taxes. The people nominated cannot remove themselves but could publicly ask for people to not vote for them. The Swedish Election Authority stated that the policy "is based on a very democratic idea, which unfortunately sometimes is taken advantage of." The head of the party feels differently. He stated that the party was just following electoral law and that “the members who proposed Princess Madeleine said they thought she would make a suitable foreign minister." While the members of the royal family are legally allowed to run for and hold political office, they don’t traditionally do it. The family stays out of politics as a way to stay impartial and truly represent all people of Sweden.
