Hope you enjoyed the "last weekend of summer!" Now it's Labor Day, it's time to think about fall, football, and your next get away. Where will you go and what will you do? Here are a few suggestions:
Fall Color Trip: As history tells us, the warm, moist summer will more than likely result in vivid fall colors so make this the year to go north. It's hard to believe, but according to some reports, tree's are starting to color in Northern Minnesota. Probably no surprise. On average, peak fall color arrives in the northern one- third of the state in mid-September to early October and the southern part of the state in late September to mid October. A weekend jaunt to the North Shore, Bemidji or Lake City could provide spectacular colors, we haven't seen for years. Keep updated on the fall color status by visiting the DNRs' site often. http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/fall_colors/index.html If you haven't booked accommodations yet, one can still find availability.
Fall Golf: Truly, there's no better time to golf and weekend golf packages outside of Minneapolis are plentiful. Depending on your level of expertise, try Superior National, a 27 hole course near Lutsen which offers competitive golf amidst different terrains. A second options is the Brainerd Lakes area. Cragun's Legacy courses is a favorite for more competitive golf and if you're looking for a value, try Breezy Point which offers an affordable all inclusive package with golf at Whitebirch and the Traditional Course. Wherever you golf, be prepared for any type of weather!
Twins Baseball: With the Twins three and a half games ahead of the Chicago White Sox after last nights unusual last minute victory, next week's series has never been as important. Why not head to Chicago for three days of nail biting action? http://www.examiner.com/road-trip-travel-in-minneapolis/ready-for-some-baseball-kc-detroit-or-chicago. In addition, if we take the AL Central and Texas clinches their division, the Twins play the "wild card..." Cross your fingers. There could be some interesting travel options for baseball fans this year.
Fall Festivals: The assortment of fall festivals, art shows and harvest celebrations are numerous. From Mankato, to Grand Rapids to Des Moines, there are too many options to list here. Look for more recommendations in the upcoming weeks but here's a few quick ones; experience a harvest meal at Schumachers Hotel and Grill 212 in New Prague, celebrate the 150th anniversary of Schells Brewery (9/18), road trip to the Kansas City Plaza Art Fair (9/24-26), or if you've never been to Madison County in Iowa, go to the Covered Bridge Festival in Madison County (Oct 9-10).
While it might seem late, the good news is that there are plenty of choices for everyone... So depending on your interests and availability, look at your calendar and plan your trip!
Tips from M.A. Anything goes for weather in the fall, so be prepared. Enjoy the Twin Cities colors but also take advantage of the fall flavors and colors through the Midwest. If not Schumachers, there are plenty of other "foodie" adventures to find outside of town. If you're going north for fall colors, plan to go during the week as you'll save both time and money. Beware of ongoing construction in Duluth.
