America's Cup Term Sheet Released

Hosting the 34th America's Cup would be a huge shot in the arm for the SoMa waterfront and for San Francisco in general. On Tuesday, the Mayor's Office of Economic and Workforce Development (OEWD) released the term sheet (or contract) and legislation that provides the basis for San Francisco's proposal to host the America's Cup race in early 2013. An Executive Summary is available at the main website for the OEWD's America's Cup project. The closest properties affected are Pier 28 for media covering the event, Piers 30/32 at the foot of Bryant Street which would be turned into the primary gathering spot for America's Cup event viewing, temporary berthage for "super yachts" around the Brannan Street Wharf and Pier 38 area, and Sea Wall Lot 330 (the parking lot along Bryant and The Embarcadero where the Watermark condo tower sits) for kids and live entertainment area for the event.

At the moment, it appears everybody recognizes this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for San Francisco to get some of our deteriorating piers fixed up and the waterfront south of the Bay Bridge given a renewed useful life. However, it is still very important that we help cheerlead this project along. First up, the Board of Supervisors Land Use Committee meeting this Monday, October 4th at 1 p.m. in Room 263 will review the term sheet. Please come to this meeting if you can to speak in favor of approval of the term sheet. If you cannot attend, please e-mail Board President David Chiu, Supervisor Eric Mar, and Supervisor Sophie Maxwell who comprise the BOS Land Use Committee between now and Monday's 1 p.m. committee meeting.
