The CW better be making a slot in its TV line-up, because a series based on Unbreakable by Kami Garcia should definitely be in development. This creepy, sexy, action-packed new series from the co-author of Beautiful Creatures is delightfully reminiscent of hit shows like “Supernatural” and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” — while bringing a delightfully fresh perspective to paranormal YA lit.
Unbreakable is one of those books that is just fun to read. It’s fast-paced, filled with charming and engaging characters, and packed with action and intrigue. Kennedy and her new Legion member friends really do remind me a bit of the “Scoobies” from vintage “Buffy” episodes — different, sometimes clashing personalities, but everyone in it for the right reasons, to defeat evil and be the good guys the world doesn’t know it needs.
And in a market flooded with paranormal literature (and plenty of fatigue for this genre), Garcia masterfully writes a mythology that is fresh and engaging. Even the beginnings of her love triangle separate themselves from the formulaic pattern seen in so many other hum-drum YA paranormal books. Unbreakable really sets itself apart.
To anyone hesitating to read this book because of the cover: I hear you. I confess, I sometimes judge books by their covers — and I wasn’t really digging the artwork for this one. But I also knew Kami was a kick-ass writer, and wouldn’t put out anything ho-hum. So I’m really delighted that I looked past a cover that didn’t speak to me, because Unbreakable was absolutely a phenomenal read. It is in stores now.
