The 54th Grammy® Awards show opened with Bruce Springsteen’s “Wild Honey”-esque “We Take Care of Our Own.” As the pulse of the show progressed, it was soon time for The Beach Boys tribute segment to begin. Maroon 5 took the surfboard themed stage and performed “Surfer Girl,” followed by Foster the People performing “Wouldn’t It Be Nice.” Then, with a brief introduction from Ryan Seacrest Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston and David Marks appeared and performed “Good Vibrations.”
Over the years the various configurations have been performing “Good Vibrations,” but quite honestly, seeing the five of them together on stage at one time, was at the very least, surreal. The guys looked and sounded great.
After the group performed, the guys gathered backstage with John Norris. When Norris asked the group about performing at the Grammys, Al Jardine stated, “We always wanted to do this. This is important. This is our 50th anniversary. We’re making a new album, and we’re going to have a wonderful tour to promote the album, so it was a natural progression for us.” Bruce followed that with, “It’s fantastic for our band to (now) be on the Grammys.”
Norris followed that up with questioning the group about the status of the new studio album. Johnston said, “…In progress, it’s gonna’ be finished pronto. We love it…we love it.” Brian moderated, “It’s a mellow album with a lot of mellow vocals…it’s gonna’ be good.” Love said, “It’s sounding really good. It’s sounding reminiscent of Pet Sounds era. Brian’s got the traditional chord progressions and harmonies he’s structured, so it’s really great to record.”
Good vibrations indeed.
