The Granada got an early crowd Friday night in anticipation of the climactic combination of beat-heavy electronic bands taking the stage. Lines formed outside the ticket booth and main entrance before Somasphere's opening set. By the time BoomBox was due to play, the big venue was overflowing with music lovers for this all-ages dance party.
Somasphere quickly collected a full crowd on the dance floor, with plenty of listeners also hanging back while getting their drink on. The four-piece electronica band brings rock and electronic dance music together to make something with fierce, adrenaline-filled energy and smooth, dance-ability. Utilizing both a full regular drum set - including hand drums - and an electronic drum set, as well as guitar, keys, synth and other equipment, the band enthralled the Granada throughout their set. Most songs had lengthy build-ups, cranking the vibrations in the venue up to the max, leaving the crowd eager for more when the set was done.
BoomBox came on stage not long after Somasphere's finale. The headlining duo had a lively audience already pumped up to dance. What had started as a healthy crowd when Somasphere finished became a jammed mob by the time the headliner got started. With both pre-recorded sounds, loops and synthesized beats to start, the BoomBox duo added live drums, guitar solos and vocals to make fresh dance tunes that satisfied the masses.
After leaving an overflowing Granada screaming for more last February, BoomBox brought their all for this show, burning with the crowd's energy and casting their own electronic bolts of power out from the stage across the full audience. A beat heavy set, the dance floor was loaded from start to finish as people twisted and jumped to the rhythms.
For $15, this show had some high expectations, but the crowd of all-ages and all scenes came together with positive energy and a lot of enthusiasm, making the most of the concert. For electronic dancers this was well worth the price of admission. Both Somasphere and BoomBox have earned good reputations in Lawrence. They are undoubtedly welcome back again soon.
