Score review: Stuart Hancock impresses with his short film score for "Hawk"

Charting a gentle, but no less impactful, course toward film score paradise, composer Stuart Hancock has delivered a fine piece of work here with Hawk, his original soundtrack to the upcoming short film.

With Hawk, Hancock makes sure to emphasize the lurking, shadowed menace of a fantasy world, utilizing whispering strings and barely-there echos to great effect amidst the lilting choral vocals. The piece as a whole very much alludes to Howard Shore's beloved Lord of the Rings scores, in that Hancock's cues are suitably evocative for the source material.

There is a nice, soothing flow to Hancock's score; an enjoyable listen which, despite being very single-minded in tempo and excitement, succeeds in transferring its emotional positively towards the listener. Hancock tries his best to inject an ethereal, mood-enhancing leitmotif to Hawk, and occasionally succeeds, despite the fact that this score tends to work more as one, coherent piece than it does a collection of cues.

Regardless, Hawk is a moody piece of work; something of which Hancock should be proud, and film score fans should investigate.
