Review: Thor passes Bechdel Test

Marvel Studios' latest production passes the Bechdel Test within the first few minutes of the movie. A strong, diverse cast and beautiful visuals keep this film a head above most comic book movies.

Anthony Hopkins channels Marlon Brando in his role as Odin, father of Thor. Natalie Portman portrays a romantic interest with interests of her own. Kat Dennings does what she always does best. Jaimie Alexander is going to be a star
of epic proportion someday (you heard it from me first). Chris Hemsworth owns his role as a roaring, flexing Norse hero.

This movie does little to deny the fact Thor is an arrogant brute. For his impulsive actions, he is banished to Earth by his saner father. From there, scientist Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) clothes, feeds, and shelters the outcasted Thor. Though Natalie's character borders on the Manic Pixie Dream Girl archetype, thankfully she is given a career and interests of her own. With Jane's love, Thor stops smashing coffee cups and becomes a matured warrior willing to sacrifice his life for others, or even serve breakfast to a hungover friend.

Comic book geeks will appreciate picking out Avengers-related Easter eggs hidden throughout the film and at the end of the credits. Thor successfully appeals to a broader audience than the predictable demographic: fans of comics, science fiction, or mythology. This film is a solid production due to its talented performers and experienced director.
