Review: Benjamin Prichard's Tennessee Whiskey, a new entrant joins the fray

Benjamin Prichard's Tennesse Whiskey is a new competitor in the once two man battle between Jack Daniel's and George Dickel.  Prichard's Distillery began production in the city of Kelso, TN in 2000 although the company was actually founded in 1997.  Although they attempt to trace their historic roots back to the distillery of Benjamin Prichard circa the 1800s, this company actually has nothing to do with the original Prichard's distillery outside of the usage of his name.  Prichard's Distillery currently produces their own brand of rum and a rye whiskey, a bourbon, a single malt barley whisky, a corn whiskey, and the whiskey being reviewed today, Benjamin Prichard's Tennessee Whiskey.

Review:

The nose of the whiskey is very nice.  It contains all of the usual suspects one would detect when whiffing a Tennessee or bourbon whiskey.  However, there is a bit more of the corn cutting through the aroma than in other similar products.  The normal vanilla, caramel, toffee, and toasted oak also are present of course.  Although overall it is a very pleasant scent, nothing of consequence is detected.  Although it hasn't been placed in too many of the recent reviews by this Examiner, I feel it is important to note here in this review that the legs of the whiskey are a little short.  Definitely more short that its similar priced competitors, George Dickel Barrel Select and Jack Daniel's Single Barrel.

The flavor is, for lack of a better descriptive, bland.  Perhaps it is better categorized as lifeless or dull.  The other notes are overpowered by the piquancy of the corn whiskey it is predominately comprised of.  Not that there were many others to note anyway.  The only other hints detected were vanilla and oak and they were off-balanced with a tad too much sweetness at the finish.  If anyone reading this review chooses to test it themselves, a 750 ML bottle can be purchased at your local area Spec's Liquors for $37.88.  Please call ahead for availability.

Editor's Note:  As I am disappointed with the quality of this particular bottling, I am not going to suggest a desired tasting method.  None of the methods tested seemed to garner a better experience for this whiskey.  I believe the problem could be that this is a bad batch so I am contemplating a second review with the assistance of some of my fellow Tennessee whiskey fans.  The score reflects its comparison with similarly priced competitors such as George Dickel Barrel Select or Jack Daniel's Single Barrel.  Perhaps it would have received a better score had it been priced lower in direct competition with George Dickel Black Label or Jack Daniel's Black Label although I do not foresee this product creating any converts from the camps of the aforementioned competitors.
