Four friends find themselves kidnapped and locked in a house with six strangers. Their only escape is to torture one another until the requirements of their captors are met, winning release. The basic concept of the film is fairly simple and direct. Once established, the movie focuses more on the methods of torture used, with graphic depictions of pain. It is about the same time we realize the theme here isn't very new or original. A couple of lame twists are thrown in at the end to make the film feel more original but feel watered down and desperate.
Acting was decent from Beck, if a bit bland. Matson was less than interesting. Smith, Skorman, Mueller, and Hazen did fairly well. Cipes was entertaining, as was Kirkland and Westmore.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were pretty good though a bit low budget. Effects were the star is this one with good attention to detail, gore, and blood work. Physical stunts were very good, particularly when Tara got popped and in other torture scenes. Dialogue was decent and added good depth with some misleading scenes and comments. Sound and soundtrack were fairly well done.
Overall Vile is an interesting attempt at shock-horror that paid a fair amount of attention to plot and acting in addition to the gore scenes and violence. Horror fans who like gore will enjoy this the most while those who cringe at pain may not.
With some foul language, extreme violence, graphic gore and violence, save this for the oldest teens and above.
Vile is no longer showing in any Littleton Colorado movie theatres.
