Movie review: The Last Stand

A small town sheriff has his quiet life interrupted when a drug kingpin escapes FBI custody and has designs on using his town as a base of operations. What the drug boss doesn't realize is that this small town sheriff is no slouch, having served his time with the LAPD.

Arnold Schwarzenegger (Ray), Johnny Knoxville (Lewis), Arron Shiver (Trooper), Forest Whitaker (Bannister), Eduardo Noriega (Cortez), Luis Guzman (Figureola), Doug Jackson (Harry), Jaimie Alexander (Sarah), Peter Stormare (Burrell).

The Last Stand begins with some brief backstory and character introduction before things really get rolling. The plot isn't all that unique; bad guy escapes, ex-cop catches him. Add guns and explosions to keep things interesting. Surprisingly, this one does remain interesting. The story moves along at a good pace and does a nice job of creating audience interest throughout.

Acting was pretty good with Arnold doing a nice job while also respecting the fact he is a hard sell as an action hero at his age. Knoxville was hysterical as usual. Whitaker and Guzman brought some more experience to the film while Shiver, Noriega and the remainder of the supporting cast were pretty good.

Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were all nicely done and the film had an overall very good technical feel. Physical effects and stunt work were both good and fit the film well. Dialogue was solid with few campy or slow spots. Sound and soundtrack were both acceptable.

Overall The Last Stand was a fairly well done crime action film that serious fans of the genre will likely enjoy. Those wanting hardcore action may be a bit disappointed.

With persistent strong violence, blood and gore, and some foul language this should be fine for older teens and above.
