Movie review: Now You See Me (2013)

When a wealthy financier brings a group of magicians together he gets more than expected when they focus on robbing from the rich to give to the poor. And while performing their magic on stage, the four must also outwit an FBI agent determined to prove they are criminals.

Jesse Eisenberg (Atlas), Mark Ruffalo (Rhodes), Woody Harrelson (McKinney), Isla Fisher (Henley), Dave Franco (Jack), Melanie Laurent (Dray), Morgan Freeman (Thaddeus Bradley), Michael Caine (Tressler).

Now You See Me begins with some very brief background on the four main characters before quickly jumping to the main story. The convenience used to bring the four magicians together was a bit thin but once they were, things began moving quickly. The blending of magic into the story both on and off stage kept the film interesting and exciting to the end. A bit more depth would have been nice but at 116 minutes, this one was already pretty long.

Acting was very enjoyable from the main cast. Eisenberg did nicely in his role and continues to play well against Harrelson. Ruffalo made a pretty good FBI agent and engaged well with Freeman. Harrelson brought his usual value, while Fisher was an enjoyable addition bringing a nice finish to the main cast. Franco was another interesting addition and did quite nicely. And of course, Caine was perfectly cast.

Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were all well done. The film obviously had a nice budget that was well used. Effects were all nicely done and consistent with the film. Dialogue was good and worked well with flashbacks. Sound and soundtrack were both good.

Overall Now You See Me is an enjoyable crime thriller well worth watching. While the film is geared toward teens, adults who like a lighter approach to a story will enjoy this quite a bit as well.

With some mild foul language, action scenes, and mild sexuality this should be fine for teens and above.
