We are all familiar with the story of Hansel & Gretel outsmarting the witch by pushing her into the oven. Now they are grown up, Hansel & Gretel have continued the theme by becoming witch bounty hunters. But getting paid doesn't make witch hunting any less dangerous or exciting.

Jeremy Renner (Hansel), Gemma Arterton (Gretel), Famke Janssen (Muriel), Pihla Viitala (Mina), Derek Mears (Edward), Ingrid Berdal (Horned Witch), Joanna Kulig (Red haired witch), Thomas Mann (Ben), Peter Stormare (Sheriff Berringer).

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters begins with a short re-telling of the original story before time warping forward 15 years where we find a grown Hansel & Gretel hunting witches. While performing work for a town, the two find that there will be an important Blood Moon in a few days and the witch Muriel has been abducting children needed for an evil spell she plans to cast. Hansel & Gretel must dig through the deception and manipulation to find the truth before the Blood Moon arrives.

Acting was good with Renner doing nicely as Hansel and playing well against Arterton, who also did quite well. Janssen did a nice job as Muriel the witch bringing a solid antagonistic darkness to the film. The remainder of the supporting cast was both solid and entertaining.

Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were all well done with a solid feel and good technical work. Physical effects were good, but CGI effects were much better. The witch effects were very good and much better expected for a lesser billed film. Dialogue was good with moments of campy that worked well as humor. Sound and soundtrack were both nice.

Overall Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters is a surprisingly entertaining and well done sci-fi action film. Sci-fi action fans will enjoy this the most while those who prefer films based in reality, or with a heavy dose of violence, may find it lacking.

With disturbing creature images, violence, and adult situations this should be fine for teens and above.
