Movie review: Fright Night (2011)

In this update of the 1985 horror comedy Charley Brewster begins to think his next door neighbor Jerry may be a vampire. After his best friend disappears, Charley turns to self-professed vampire expert Peter Vincent for help. Unfortunately Peter proves useless and it is up to Charley to save his family.

Anton Yelchin (Charley Brewster), Colin Farrell (Jerry), David Tennant (Peter Vincent), Imogen Poots (Amy), Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Ed), Dave Franco (Mark), Reid Ewing (Ben), Will Denton (Adam), Sandra Vergara (Ginger).

Fright Night starts off like the 1985 film with the same basic storyline becoming apparent as the character introductions take place. The nice part about this remake is that the original story is presented very quickly, serving as a nice reminder of the original film. From there the film builds a new, continuing storyline with a bit less humor and a bit more horror. The film finally winds down into a somewhat predictable ending with the requisite blood, horror, and romance.

Acting was decent with Yelchin doing a decent imitation of the original Charley Brewster. Farrell was an interesting choice as the vampire and brought a completely different energy to the film. Tennant was an amusing choice as Vincent and did well. The remainder of the cast did well with good presentation and emotion.

Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were simple but fitting throughout the film. Film quality was good and crisp. Setting was in new homes which were probably easy to create but made for very clean sets. Effects were a mix of physical and CGI and were nicely done. Dialogue was good however this version of the film held quite a bit less humor than the original. Sound and soundtrack were both well done.

Overall Fright Night was an entertaining remake despite being quite a bit different than the original. Those hoping to see the original may be disappointed after the first thirty minutes. Those who are hoping for a bit more may enjoy this one quite a bit.

With horror violence, blood and gore, some foul language and sexual references, this should be fine for older teens and above.

Fright Night is no longer showing in any Littleton Colorado movie theatres.
