Doom starts off pretty well building interest nicely before devolving into an action gore-fest. Though the film deviates from the video game, and weaves versions together, most game fans seem to think the plot is decent. The story moves along good with a brief interlude from a first person perspective imitating the video game. Fortunately it is short lived and we are returned quickly to the blood, gore, and realization that the plot is really about bringing alien data back to Earth. The result is a lackluster finish to what ends up being a simple action flick.
Acting was okay with Johnson trying to use his scary face more often than usual in place of actual acting. Urban had a bit more depth and did well. Weaver also added a bit more to the film. The remainder of the supporting cast was decent though it didn't appear they were given much to work with.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were fitting and fairly well done. CGI and physical effects were also solid and supported the story nicely. Dialogue was mediocre and even a bit campy at times. Sound and soundtrack were both good.
Overall Doom is a decent sci-fi action flick that doesn't waste time with a complicated plot, staying focused instead on the action and aliens. Fans of the video game will likely enjoy this the most while others may find it lacking depth in several ways.
With plenty of violence, gore, and foul language save this for teens and above.
Doom is no longer showing in any Littleton, Colorado movie theatres.
