"Oh, What a Night!"
"Jersey Boys" is a visually stunning, smile-inducing, good time romp! The award-winning musical, currently at the Landmark Theater as part of their Broadway in Richmond series, is a definite must-see. It is the true story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons and their rise to fame.
Audiences of all ages will love this show, but it will especially appeal to the older crowds who fondly remember Frankie Valli from their high school years. But don’t think you need to know the full repertoire of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons in order to enjoy this show – no prior familiarity with the group is needed. The story is touching, filled with humor and heartbreak, successes and failures.
The entire cast was outstanding, but it needs to be said that Hayden Milanes, who plays Frankie Valli, gave a mind-blowing performance. My mother, who was my guest for the evening, marveled saying, “I can’t believe it – it’s just like watching Frankie Valli!” Mom was a Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons fan back in her youth and it was obvious from watching her expressions that this show transported her back in time.
I do need to mention, just in case you are easily offended, beware the profanity. If you’ve ever seen “Jersey Shore” or “Real Housewives of New Jersey,” you know that Jersey folks like to drop the F-Bomb – and “Jersey Boys” is no exception to this rule. It works – given the guys blue-collar Newark background – I just wanted to give fair warning. It’s a little like “Goodfellas” meets Broadway – including an appearance by Joe Pesci. (ok, it’s not really Joe Pesci on stage – but it is actor Ian Joseph playing a young Joe Pesci).
Bottom line – Excellent cast, moving story, incredible visuals, and absolutely amazing musical numbers.
Do not miss out on your chance to see this gem!
