Let’s get ‘fright' to the point. Most of us think of the United States Military Academy at West Point as the place young cadets become military leaders to serve our country. West Point houses more than cadets. There are also several ghosts lurking about the country’s oldest continuously running military base.
‘Fright to the Point-Ghosts of West Point’ by Major Thad Krasnesky (Schiffer Books) offers a collection of 13 eerie ghost stories focused on the ‘spirits’ that still make their home in the confines of West Point, and seem to march along with the living residents who study and work at the base. Krasnesky, a military officer, did his research on the ghost stories while stationed at West Point.
The 'lucky 13' chapters take you the Morrison Home--last in a row of houses known as Professor’s Row. There you will meet the twice widowed Vivian who was doomed to mourn her soldier husbands. There is also a chapter about a terrible train accident in which several young women and cadets died on their way to the Fall Dance. It caused a frantic search and rescue based out of the West Point Train Depot. They say there are spirits which seem to waltz through the rail yard.
No ghost story book could be complete without a tale or two about the nearby cemeteries. The old section of the West Point cemetery has a tombstone marker labeled unknown. Most folks believe it is the grave of Tioran O’Connor, a young West Point Academy Lieutenant. Learn his story and other spirited soldiers buried on the grounds.
Did you know General George Armstrong Custer was a graduate of West Point? He was brought back from the battle of Little Bighorn and buried in the West Point Cemetery. Find out what happened to the statue atop his monument and why he still haunts the historic graveyard.
When you are ready for a little bit of a haunted R & R, you must enlist in a copy of ‘Fright to the Point-Ghosts of West Point.’ The ‘spirits’ of the United States never seemed so proud and ready to serve you with such great haunted tales!
