Delicious Dish: lunch combo at Tsunami

lunch combo at Tsunami

Before Takashi burst onto the Salt Lake dining scene and half off sushi joints popped up on every corner, one of my favorite sushi restaurants was Tsunami in SugarHouse. I used to be a regular (practically weekly) guest there but due to SugarHouse construction surrounding it over the years and moving south (I’m now closer to the Union Heights location than the original) I just haven’t been here in ages.Last week, as I was exploring the S Line SugarHouse Trolley, I decided that I should revisit—and I’m happy that I did.

Much is the same about Tsunami including the serene interior and efficient staff but a lovely patio and some menu updates have also freshened up the place to me. Originally planning on ordering a few rolls, I stumbled across the lunch combo while surveying my choices. I typically avoid these combo deals in Japanese restaurants like the plague because they usually include boring choices instead of what is actually good about the restaurant.

However, after seeing the sake sampler for just $7.50 (choose three sakes in your pairing) I decided to not rush into any food decisions and instead take in all that was available while enjoying my Pearl and pear choices.

What sold me on the lunch combo? The fact that I could get two of my favorite things—sashimi and agedashi tofu—for just $10.99! Along with your two choices of entrée, you get rice, two flavorful potstickers and a plate of not-greasy tempura vegetables. My sashimi included four large pieces of fresh, properly firm cuts of fish chosen by the chef. Agedashi tofu was plumb and moist and with seven two-bite pieces, I was amazed at the value.

The lunch combo box is served until 3 p.m. and you can choose from the following options: shrimp tempura; sushi consisting of a half of a California roll and a half tuna roll; steak, chicken or salmon teriyaki, sashimi, veggie roll or agedashi tofu.

I love rediscovering a good restaurant and finding a new go-to lunch choice in the process. Thanks Tsunami for being great all these years—I won’t be a stranger anymore.
