Shelly Field has created one of the best books on how to break into the entertainment field. Not only does “Managing Your Career in Theater & Performing Arts” illustrate to readers how to get their foot in the door at the company of their choice; it gives examples on how to obtain your dream job,and offers strategies to advance in your performing arts career.
Most books on entertainment business only focus on a few aspects of entertainment like the music business or television productions. However, “Managing Your Career in Theater & Performing Arts” goes way beyond basic advice and gives tons of helpful information in talent and business areas of theater and performing arts. Actors, comedians, song writers, singers, publicists, dancers, will love this book because it includes tips, exercises, and useful ideas to push readers to the next level in their career. Some of the highlights of the book are ways to set yourself apart from others in entertainment, action plans, marketing yourself, networking opportunities, audition advice, and information on how to protect your works.
Another resourceful part of the book is the appendix and bibliography located at back of book. These sections of the book contain useful information such as list of books, internet websites, and contact information on organizations that specialize in entertainment industry to help readers stay updated on latest venues, performances, and leaders in performing arts.
Shelly Field has first hand knowledge in the entertainment world as a motivational speaker to actors and as a celebrity publicist. She is also well known for her series of Career Coach books which include Career Opportunities in the Music Industry, Career Opportunities in the Sports Industry, and many other career guidance volumes. All of these experiences are evident when Shelly Field's gives testimonies of some of her obstacles that she encountered as she worked her way up the rung in the performing arts arena. The stories are inspirational and eye opening to students interested in this field and to even the more experienced entertainment workers who seek guidance in becoming successful in show business.
I checked out “Managing Your Career in Theater & Performing Arts” from the North Hollywood library. After reading through the book once I realized that this is a must have book for anyone interested in entertainment industry. Reading the book and copying some pages out of book is useful. But purchasing book and having it available at any given time is the best choice. The subject matter in this book is like the bible on how to be prosperous in theater and performing arts. The information in this book can help music writers and script writers avoid wasting money on legal fees and teaches readers to become familiar with contracts. I have read several books on entertainment industry but this is one of my favorites because of the wealth of information it provides and because it is easy to read and understand. Plus the scenario sections, worksheets, bullet points, starred tips, and illustrations helped keep my attention and made reading interesting. Most books do not use these modern techniques in formatting reading material. “Managing Your Career in Theater & Performing Arts” earned 5 stars for being an in depth book on job leads, making contacts, landing an interview, steps to acquire the ideal job, and for providing chapter after chapter with jam packed helpful information.
