‘Bulletproof Mind’ empowers gun owners to prepare for, respond to violence

Can we “take the lessons learned from Columbine, Virginia Tech, and the World Trade Center and apply them to our future”?

Why is denial “the true problem in America”?

These are two of the questions answered in “Bulletproof Mind,” a limited edition five-DVD set presenting an instructional seminar conducted by Lt. Col. Dave Grossman, one of the world’s leading experts and trainers of military and law enforcement professionals on preparing for and winning enemy encounters—two of his books are on the required reading list of the U.S. Marine Corps Commandant. Produced with the United States Concealed Carry Association, the seminar lives up to its promise of helping to prepare those it educates for the unpredictable, and in some cases, the damn near unimaginable.

Disc 1 primes us for what to expect. It’s title, “The Threat to Our Children,” seems almost an understatement, as Grossman leads us through…let’s just say you will hear details of the unspeakable horror of the Beslan massacre that will make you confront the true nature, tactics and agenda of evil, and the threat it poses not just to us as individuals, but to our very way of life.  Still, Grossman give us the most important key when he shares with us what it is agenda killers fear most—failure—and how that gives us power.

Disc 2 gives us “The Answer: The Five D’s,” that is, how to overcome denial, and how to deter, detect, delay, and ultimately destroy the enemy and his murderous plans.  This is where Grossman gives us some simple examples for responding to school and workplace invaders, such as limiting access to a single point of entry, making rooms securable, and ultimately, being armed and prepared with “heart and mind ready.”

Disc 3, “Crime in America: It’s Worse than it Looks” goes about proving just that, and lets us see that we can “save the celebration” because much of our crime reporting is based on “cooking the books” and “fudging the figures” for political reasons.  This segment will be perceived by some as the most controversial of Grossman’s lessons, as  he does not spare the entertainment industry, particularly in the way interactive video games stimulate production of “fight or flight hormones” that reward violence. Regardless of resistance to the notion this will no doubt provoke in some ardent gamers, it certainly seems a topic worthy of controlled and peer-reviewed study.

Disc 4 introduces us to “Sheepdogs! Mental Prep for Combat.” Here, we explore the three types of people: Sheep, the victims, sheepdogs, the protectors, and wolves, the rapacious attackers. And here, Grossman urges us to “fight violence with superior violence,” tells us “the weak link is the mind,” and clues us into a mindset “sheep cannot comprehend.”  That would be ”the Warrior Spirit,” and the truism that “only a predator can hunt a predator.” Particularly of interest to this reviewer were some of the physiological reactions to expect, and the concept of “stress inoculation.”

Disc 5, “After the Smoke Clears,” is about “surviving the aftermath” and ties everything together, including how to deal with disorienting flashbacks and overwhelming emotions that are quite normal, but too often catch us by surprise because we haven’t been prepared to expect them. We also learn something that, again, sheep simply cannot comprehend and won’t believe—but some of us can and will: Lt. Col. Grossman’s ultimate inspiring message, and this comes out loud, clear and true, is one of love.

The set has a total runtime of 4.8 hours—about the time it takes to play a round of golf (don’t get Grossman started on that subject—watch the DVDs to find out why), and can be purchased for…well, this is a review, not a sales pitch.  Watch the promotional video in this column's sidebar media player, then click on the link at the end of this review to learn more, to listen to the first 30 minutes of live presentation audio, to read testimonials from enthusiastic attendees, and, yes, to order.

Longtime readers know my review policy is one-sided: I don’t do bad ones.  That’s because I figure it’s not my place to rain on someone else’s labor of love, and if I subjectively don’t care for something, I opt to decline giving a review and just remain silent. I’m not remaining silent here, and believe after watching” Bulletproof Mind,” you’ll be joining the enthusiastic live attendees, inviting your friends over to watch it, taking it down to your gun club...

What's in a name?

Our friends at Oregon Firearms Federation warn us of deceptive games being played by an anti-gun legislator to take a simple bill protecting concealed handgun permit holders and then weasel-words out rights-eroding exceptions.
