Bon Jovi ‘Because We Can’ song review

Bon Jovi has released their debut single "Because We Can" from their upcoming studio album “What About Now.”

According to a news release posted today at Bon Jovi’s official website, the song hit worldwide radio today at 7:00 a.m. (EST) and was made available for purchase today at iTunes.

“Because We Can” is a medium-tempo rocker, which sounds more self-consciously pop radio friendly than material from their last two albums, the harder edged “The Circle” from 2009 or 2008’s more country-rock flavored “Lost Highway.”

From the opening four-on-the-floor drumbeat, which moves immediately into the song’s chorus in which frontman Jon Bon Jovi proclaims, “I don’t wanna be another wave in the ocean –I am a rock just not another grain of sand,” the multi-platinum selling New Jersey rock icons strut their wares in this hook-laden, four-minute pop-rock anthem.

Written by Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora and Nashville composer Billy Falcon, the song moves into the first two verses, emerging from a chimey Sambora guitar riff into a minor key groove, propelled by Tico Torres rock solid drumbeat and a pedaled single note bass line.

The verse unfolds the story about the love interest, who is “staring out the window – so tired of living life in black and white.”

The chorus shifts the song back into a major key over which Bon Jovi and chorus entreat, “Wanna be the one your run to when you need a shoulder – I ain’t a soldier but I’m here to take a stand – because we can.”

Though not on a par with the band’s best work, the song is a decently crafted pop effort, which will likely be warmly embraced by fans and work well in their upcoming live shows.

“Because We Can” is available for purchase at iTunes.

The “Livin’ on a Prayer” hitmaker’s 12th studio album “What About Now” hits shelves on March 26.

The “Because We Can” Canadian tour leg kicks off on Feb. 13 in Montreal, QC at Bell Centre and finishes up on April 5 in Winnipeg, MB at MTS Centre.

Tickets are available now through Ticketmaster, AEGLive.com, and local venues.
