With all the excitement over the new Rego Center eateries, it’s sometimes easy to forget the established restaurants that have survived several years -- and even decades -- as part of the Rego Park landscape. The restaurants below are all privately-owned, non-chain eateries, whose menus and service have withstood the many changes in the neighborhood.
Established in 1945, Ben’s Best Kosher Deli still has table service, take-out, and catering. They bake their own rye bread daily, and serve up overstuffed sandwiches of their famous smoked meats [pastrami is most popular], genuine chicken soup with matzoh balls, grilled hotdogs, knishes, and a full kosher deli menu for lunch and dinner. Since 1983, Tung Shing House has been serving up Chinese food to Rego Park residents at 97-45 Queens Boulevard. As its website says, Tung Shing House was “initially created to offer its guests a journey through China’s most treasured cuisines.”. With dishes that range from Cantonese to Mandarin to Szechuan, this restaurant -- a Rego Park landmark -- appeals to many different pallettes. In addition, there is a sushi bar, full wine and cocktail list, and party room that holds 60. Delivery can be ordered at 718-275-0038.
For over 50 years, the Barnes family has operated London Lennie’s at 63-88 Woodhaven Boulevard, first as a fish-and-chips shop, and evolving into a top-notch seafood restaurant. The Barnes family is still serving up fish and seafood, selected daily from the Fulton Fish Market. London Lennie’s runs regular festivals and featured items several times throughout the year. For traditional American fare, the Shalimar Diner has been serving up generous plates of food for decades at 63-68 Austin Street [telephone 718-544-7724]. For several years, The Tower Diner, has been greeting the residents of Central Queens with classic diner food, as well as Greek specialties, at 98-95 Queens Boulevard [at 99th Street], and is family-owned. Despite the arrival of Rego Center and the new national chain restaurants, Rego Park has a variety of independent eateries that are largely family-owned and run. These established restaurants survive through neighborhood changes, and remain a special Rego Park landmarks.
