Just how stupid is Al Gore, anyway?

  (Photo:  NBC screenshot)

Former vice-president, environmental guru, and Nobel laureate, Al Gore, was on NBC’s tonight Show with Conan O’Brien the other night, speaking on geothermal energy. Gore, who flunked out of both law school and divinity school (how does one flunk out of divinity school?), is now a self-styled scientific film maker, and held forth to O’Brien and his audience that geothermal energy is one of the overlooked solutions to the pressing problem of Global Warming.

Gore claimed that the earth’s mantle is “several million degrees” at “2 kilometers or so down,” and the “crust of the earth is hot.” See, all we need to do is start drilling a few deep holes in our backyards, and we will be able heat our homes, generate our electricity, and kick our suicidal addiction to carbon fuels.

  (Charts: wattsupwiththat.com)

When enviro-loonies like Algore start talking about windmills, cold fusion, solar and geothermal energy, just ask yourself: “Gee, I wonder why folks aren’t already doing this, if it’s so simple and so obvious.” Greenies love to use the word “sustainable;” but you never hear them mention the word “practicable.” That, and concepts like “affordable,” and “feasible,” never seem to find a place in the environmental lexicon.

The usual response to this sort of logical challenge is to refer to the conspiratorial cabal of oil/coal/energy capitalists who somehow prevent these “sustainable” energy sources from being put into use. You know, the same coterie of bourgeois baddies who keep suppressing that guy who invented the carburetor that runs on water.

Back to Algore: There are a number of problems with geothermal energy. First of all, Gore was way off base in his description of the temperature of the Earth’s mantle. You have to drill down almost two miles, before you get enough heat to create steam (100 degrees Celsius). Secondly, there is no place in the continental U.S. or in Europe where this can be done on an economical basis (with the exception of Yellowstone National Park, Iceland, and a couple of spots in Italy, next to active volcanoes).

Gore is totally clueless: A few million degrees here and there and pretty soon we’re talking about real temperature! Sure, it’s possible to install geothermal heat pumps in your home; but the cost of installation and operation will never be recovered in your lifetime, or in the life of your house. You could even pave your backyard with solar panels and save a couple of bucks on your LG&E bill each month; but at under three cents a kilowatt hour, 120/240 juice is pretty cheap here in Louisville. And, ask your neighbors if it’s O.K. for you to put up a giant windmill on your front lawn. We dare you.

One wag summed up Algore’s remarks thusly:

Temperature of the sun’s corona: 1–2 million kelvin

Temperature of the sun’s photosphere: 6,000 kelvin

Temperature of the Earths mantle, more than “2 kilometers or so down”: between 500 °C to 900 °C (773 to 1173 kelvin)

Watching Gore make a complete scientific idiot of himself on national TV:  Priceless

Could you please substantiate your claim that former vice president Gore "flunked out" of both divinity school and law school? My understanding is that he took courses at Vanderbilt's divinity school, but was not looking to get a degree. And in the case of law school, he stopped because he was elected to Congress in 1976. But you claim he "flunked out." Perhaps you don't understand that there is a difference between taking a course at a University while not pursuing a degree and "flunking out." You ask your reader how one flunks out of divinity school. Let me explain: you flunk out of divinity school when you fail to pass your courses and the school requires you to leave based on that lack of performance. See? So maybe Gore wasn't "stupid," as your headline so maturely puts it, but was taking courses at the university for his own reasons.

Marcus - visit htp://www.larryelder.com/Gore/goredubiousrecord.htm and you'll find some of the reason for the comments in the article. Specifically, some quotes of interest from the article linked:

In 1971, Gore enrolled in Vanderbilt Divinity School where, according to Bill Turque, author of "Inventing Al Gore," he received F's in five of the eight classes he took over the course of three semesters. Not surprisingly, Gore did not receive a degree from the divinity school. Nor did Gore graduate from Vanderbilt Law School, where he enrolled for a brief time and received his fair share of C's.

When you receive "F" in 5 of 8 classes it's fair to say a person has flunked out as they have displayed a serious inability to pass the courses. Everyone who worships Gore is unlikely to be swayed by the truth that he's an opportunist who is not averse to using any and all means and methods to get what he wants - but then again what more would one expect when people feed his addictions?

Okay, "stupid," "opportunist," "addict" -- these are all interesting labels to toss around and I recall them well from junior high. What I'm more interested in, however, is the claim that he "flunked out" of divinity school and law school. That just is not the case. If you are a student in good standing, you see an opportunity to run for Congress, you get elected to Congress and you then decide officeholding is a full-time commitment and you don't return to your law studies, that isn't "flunking out." It may be cute way to attack Gore, and you may get a thrill from doing that, but it just is not true. See the difference? The facts vs. your emotional need.

Honestly this is a terribly written article. It's full of emotional fallacies and attempts of diversion that degrade any factual quality it possesses to questionable extents. I'm not convinced that someone who finds it necessary to describe flunking out of Divinity school something significant or related to his ability to suggest and or describe an alternative form of energy. Keep it related and retain your persuasiveness.

I am a ground source geothermal driller. I do it because it is a cheap way to heat and cool houses. I did it before there was a green movement. I watched the clip you put up, and found nothing wrong with Gore's statements. As much as I am not a fan of his, I cannot stand for twisting statements. You are trying to twist geothermal electricity production and ground source heat pumps to make Al look like a fool. Sorry but bottom line is that both geothermal technologies work. Please use only true facts, straight forward, no twisting and you may be successful. As long as you lie and twist statements you are no better than the politicians and whackos ruining this country.

most of humanity can't get pass God anyway, so I guess most of us are kind of stupid, doesn't take an Al Gore to flunk divine school and not become vice president. plus, he was showing what his job description was as v.p. making phone calls and raising millions of dollars. come on, only white people can be stupid in america and become vice presidential material. a minority candidiate would have been grilled to death with a litany of college degrees. not a white guy. he can just smile and lie like hell.

Al Gore didn't fail out of either Law or Divinity School; He completed the former after returning from Vietnam, and dropped-out of the latter before going to Vietnam. Before you scrutinize his military record, he was there in a journalistic capacity.

Al Gore also does not approve of the Carbon Credits system; it's a staunchly anti-environmental system, one that no one who does not believe God has the thermostat could, in good conscience, think is a "good" idea.

Al Gore is indeed a very dumb individual. This is a compulsive liar that just can't help himself. No wonder the globalists picked this snake oil salesman to sell NAFTA, GATT and "global warming" to Americans. He has the gift of spewing reams of BS while keeping a straight face. He probably believes his own outrageous BS.

Oh well. Honest Al is gonna have to go back to the drawing board and think up some new scam to tax us all.

    Great article, Sir,
Nevertheless a little bit of information is needed here. I live in Switzerland where quite a few homes are heated by geothermal system. Monthly cost of heating/hot water for a nice one family house: $50.- (Yes, fifty -five zero- bucks, or even less)the cost of electricity to run the pumps.

Its nice warm in here and cheap.
    Wishing you a good day.

I see your penchant for playing fast and loose with facts is still with you.

Gore was no brilliant student, but has a rather high IQ (134) and graduated from Harvard with honors in government though having some rough semesters. Like many young people who aren't focussed on their direction he wasn't primarily looking for academic accomplisment.

His involvement with theology school was at a time of searching. He'd just come back from Vietnam and was upset about his father's situation. He started some courses then withdrew, getting incomplete grades. He then went to Law School and did quite well until he decided he wanted to run for office.

He's a very bright man, not a scientist, but one with sufficient brains to think well. In that regard he is clearly in contrast to many here.

Sorry, rm, the "climategate" doesn't even scratch the case for Global warming. You're relying on the usual crew of ignoramus pundits. Its a typical PR disaster when internal mail is interpreted by morons to find any way to twist the facts. But even if all the work by that group was thrown out, and there's no reason to do so, its a drop in the bucket.

I realize it takes effort to learn facts and understand the issues but the ignorance and typical smarmy smirking cynicism in many of these comments makes one wonder about whether we might consider to re-institute literacy requirements for voting.

I'm about as far from an Al Gore supporter as you'll ever find, but he did not say in his interview what you claim he said. He said the "interior" of the earth was 2 million degrees, and if you dig down far enough, it's warm enough to supply heat to your house. He did not say it's "several million degrees" 2 km down.

Don't get me wrong - Gore is waaay off on a LOT of things. But you're really doing a twist job on this, and trying to make it sound like he said what he didn't say.

I would posit that there is not a stupid bone in Al Gore's body. He figured out a long time ago that if religion was your game, televangelism was the way to go. If politics was your game, manipulation of the political system for fun and profit was the easiest claim to fame.
His carbon credit scam utilizes and masters the fiat money scam, in fact makes it art work. It is like pure evil genius. Now it is easy to see the personal inurement angel, now the thing to tie into it is how the dnc also has a fiscal stake in the game. If that is discovered than you have the motherload. Rest assured it is nowhere near what Al and Tipper are scheduled to receive. Figure they have already hoodwinked the EU.
No, he is a lot of things, but I would never underestimate him as stupid.
