More good news might be on the way for renewable energy enthusiasts as Piedmont BioProducts plans on beginning construction of a biomass refinery in Pittsylvania County, Virginia that would convert timber byproducts, feedstock, and other organic material into oil.
According to Piedmont’s CEO Ken Moss, the company hopes to start construction for the plant in 2012, starting production in late 2012 or in early 2013.
From the outset, the refinery would begin making close to 6,000 gallons of oil per day with a workforce of 8 people. However, Moss envisions the refinery being able to produce close to 60,000 gallons a day in the future, employing about 40 people.
Private sector funding and the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission would assist in paying for the project.
When the new biomass refinery is finally up and running, I have little doubt that it will again prove the naysayers wrong: clean energy can promote sustainability as well as job and economic growth!
