It appears the job of governing is too much for Nancy Pelosi, who may be finally coming apart at the seams.
Pelosi almost broke down in tears today at a press conference, begging that Americans tone down the overheated rhetoric that has typified the conflict-ridden national debate over health care reform.
In response to a question about the state of political discourse in the country, Pelosi suggesting that the right-wing’s loud opposition to Obamacare was creating the kind deadly political environment that consumed San Francisco in the late 70s, leading to riots and culminating in the 1978 assassinations of Mayor George Moscone and gay civic leader Harvey Milk, murdered by homophobic conservative Dan White.
Choking up, Pelosi said:
"I think we all have to take responsibility for our actions and our words. We are a free country and this balance between freedom and safety is one that we have to carefully balance. I saw…I saw this myself in the late seventies in San Francisco. This kind of rhetoric was very frightening and it gave—it created a climate in which violence took place. I wish that we all again would curb our enthusiasm in some of the statements that are made, with the understanding that some of the ears this is falling on are not as balanced as the person making the statement might assume."
Pelosi added that people should be careful about inciting violence.
Pelosi is right, and she might use this opportunity to reflect on her own belligerent left-wing partisanship, including her insinuation that the CIA maliciously lied to Congress and the editorial in which she channeled Bush by calling opponents of Obamacrat healthcare reform “un-American.”
Before calling for an end to nasty rhetoric, Pelosi should one, take responsibility for her own actions and words that have helped disunite Americans; two, apologize; and three, ask her compatriots in the Democratic establishment to finally stop poisoning American by playing the race card.

Pelosi is talking about the violence in SF in the 70's and conflating it with the peaceful protesters in DC on Saturday.
