Ouch! French President Sarkozy slams 'naive' Obama for living in 'virtual world' on Iran

Obama cannot catch a break these days.

Many observers felt his big UN speech was egocentric, apologetic, and overly critical of the United States, though it has garnered praise from some rather…um…colorful characters – including tin pot dictators Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Hugo Chavez of Venezuela.

Perhaps sensing that the new President is the most easily-rolled American commander-in-chief elected in recent memory, Iran has responded to Obama’s efforts to unite the UN in opposition to nuclear proliferation by signaling that the Iranian nation’s ruling Islamofascists are closer than ever to producing a nuclear weapon.

That could signal the destruction of Israel, as Ahmadinejad is an unrepentant anti-Semite who has again taken to belligerence and Holocaust denial in recent months.

With a showdown between a potentially nuclear Iran and the rest of the world looming in the background, Obama still clings to the hope of worldwide nuclear disarmament, praising the United Nations anti-nuclear weapons pact:

“The historic resolution we just adopted enshrines our shared commitment to a goal of a world without nuclear weapons. We now face proliferation of a scope and complexity that demands new strategies and new approaches.”

But French President Nicolas Sarkozy apparently has had it with Obama’s apology tour of weakness, urging the United States’s chief executive come down hard on Iran, according to the UK Telegraph:

Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, came close to mocking his American counterpart for the good intentions, which Mr. Obama had heralded as an "historic" step towards nuclear abolition, even though it set no specific targets or fresh mandates.

"We live in a real world not a virtual world," the Frenchman told the 15-member council. "And the real world expects us to take decisions.

"President Obama dreams of a world without weapons ... but right in front of us two countries are doing the exact opposite.

"Iran since 2005 has flouted five security council resolutions. North Korea has been defying council resolutions since 1993.

"I support the extended hand of the Americans, but what good has proposals for dialogue brought the international community? More uranium enrichment and declarations by the leaders of Iran to wipe a UN member state off the map," he continued, referring to Israel.

The sharp-tongued French leader even implied that Mr. Obama's resolution 1887 had used up valuable diplomatic energy.

"If we have courage to impose sanctions together it will lend viability to our commitment to reduce our own weapons and to making a world without nuke weapons," he said.

Mr. Sarkozy has previously called the US president's disarmament crusade "naïve".

Dang, Sarkozy, tell us how you really feel – don’t hold back, brutha.

Ever thought you would like to see the day when a French President would be slamming an American President for foreign policy weakness – and not be joking?

Neither did I.

D.K., with all respect, Sarkozy is a fascist who makes Bush seem like a flower-child. Sarkozy IS LYING ABOUT "WIPE ISRAEL OFF THE MAP." You need to take 5-minutes to read the speech to confirm this fascist ploy. I don't promote my articles in comments, but I have to ask you to read my summation of the facts in "An attack on Iran from US and/or Israel is a WAR OF AGGRESSION" when war is on the line.

D.K Jamaal sounds like a NeoCon.

Interesting that he is black man, a brutha, always on the receiving of racism and injustice, and he wants to deny Iran of justice to be a nuclear state just like Israel or western countries are.

The only racism I see on this page is from those who are trashing DK for not toeing the liberal lines that they would expect an black man should repeat. I say good for you DK, its nice to see independent minds working and coming to rational conclusions despite what others "expect" you to say.

You ate getting to them BIG time, it seems. The trolls are out in droves. Always attacking your opinion. Often attacking you and your race.

It is quite amazing the racism the so-called tolerant left exhibit every time an African American doesn't toe the line to their agenda. Keep up the great work DK!!!

Its funny, people who support the tea parties are called racists... Then there are the leftist, and progressives who throw out sayings like this if you are an African American, and you don't happen to agree with the president..

You keep on telling it as it is my friend, do not let these hateful people silence you. Bloggers are always so much tougher behind a keyboard in their mom and dads basement, making hateful speech.. The people making these ignorant posts are the same people that call libertarians, conservatives, republicans, and blue dog democrats racists, hate mongers that don't care about the poor...

I wonder if the "virtual world" of which Sarkozy speaks is that same world where France resided when they were building a nuclear reactor for Saddam Hussein.

Obama knows that Israel will eventually attack an Iranian nuclear site, with or without U.S. support.

Without U.S. support, it could get very messy if U.S. and Israeli jets try out their dogfighting skills on one another.

With U.S. support, it could get very politically messy because even tacit U.S. support (like allowing Israeli jets over Iraqi airspace) will make the U.S. troops in Iraq even more at risk and, if you can imagine, further destabilize the Middle East region.

As Barack played the Fool before all nations in New York, Mahmoud played the bully. ED and Carl are living in their virtual world. It doesn't matter that the bully said he will WIPE ISREAL OFF THE MAP on numerous occasions. What color is the sky in your world?

Great write up. And love the last line about foreign policy weakness.

I find this complicated. Technically George Bush did not believe in negotiating with rogue countries and called for sanctions and other acts as well, did the world go forward with Mr. Bush?

I don't think they really did.

So now Barack Obama is trying the opposite approach. It probably won't work either, but is it too soon to condemn his approach as well?

Mr. Herman, obviously you do not understand Islamic terrorism, nor the mentality that pervades nations like Iran and Palestine. You are as naive as Obama seems to be.

Finally, a reason to regain some respect for the French. Now if only more voters will begin to demand a "real" President in place of the "virtual" one we now have.
