Florida church plans to burn Korans on 9/11 anniversary

The Dove World Outreach Center sells these t-shirts on their website (Gainesville Sun)
Pastor Terry Jones of the Dove World Outreach Center, a church in Florida that pledges to "stand up for righteousness," is organizing an "International Burn a Koran Day" for the upcoming anniversary of Sept 11.

The nondenominational church, which has "Islam is of the devil" signs displayed in its front lawn, has organized past protests against Islam. (It's also the title of a book penned by Jones. The sign has repeatedly been vandalized --see below.)

"We feel, as Christians, one of our jobs is to warn," said Jones. He hopes that the protests he organizes will offer Muslims a reason to convert.

Apparently, they got the idea from a Facebook page called "Everybody Draw Muhammad Day."

Reaction? Well, according to something called the Religion News Service, Jones claims that "people have been mailing Qurans to the church to burn."

The church is also taking heat for planning an upcoming protest against homosexuality in Gainesville, FL. The church's website declares: "Free speech is hated by homosexuals and they do not like to hear the truth about their perverted lifestyle. We are protesting our openly homosexual Mayor Aug. 2."

OK, so they're going to burn Korans to show the Muslims they hate them, and they're putting together a protest to show gays that they hate them.
I'm having a little trouble understanding their "outreach" theory. Churches and pastors like this one would make Jesus roll over in his grave.
Why do people who say that they're followers of Christ want to act in hateful ways toward those who believe differently from themselves?
Would the people opposed to a mosque inside a community center just two blocks from the World Trade Center find the pastor's actions equally disrespectful?
Does the pastor even know that the Koran affirms that Jesus was born of the Virgin Mary and affirms him as Son of God? How would these people feel if Muslims burned the Bibles from their church?
There are roughly 1.3 billion Muslims in the world and only a tiny fraction of them are allied with al-Qaeda. Actions like those of Pastor Jones are not only won't endear Americans to Muslims, but will serve as recruiting tool for terrorists. Ironically, Jones is helping the very people he says he despises.
And you wonder why Islamists consider the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan by westerners a "Holy War." It's exactly because of this kind of idiotic pulpit politics.
Jesus says that all Christians must love their friends and their enemies as themselves. The Bible clearly states that if we do not love first, than all our actions are meaningless and of no effect, or worse, they nullify the word of our testimony about Christ.
But let him have his book-burning day. Free speech always has its fringe groups. The best weapon against free speech is always more free speech. Maybe Christians out to pray for people like Pastor Terry Jones by having an "International Love Muslims Day."

"The bosom of America is to be open to receive...the oppressed and persecuted of all nations and religions; whom we shall welcome to a participation of all our rights and privileges...They may be Mohometans (Muslims), Jews or Christians of any sect, or they may be atheists." --George Washington, 1783.

Signs out front of the Dove church say "Islam is of the Devil" but has repeatedly been vandalized.

What Mr Maiman doesn't understand is that islam sees love and turn the other cheek as weak and contemptible. While you are lavishing love on them they will blow you to smithereens. The Lord of the Bible had His Children of Israel to war against their enemies. Islam is the avowed enemy of God and of Christians and Jews, and have sworn to kill everyone that is not islam. Hold on just a minute. The koran does not claim Jesus is the Son of God. They consider Him a prophet. The very mention of Jesus as the Son of God is blasphemy to them. Islam like most of the world is living in darkness. Christ Jesus is The Light.

That is retarded. What point will this drive across other than set an example of hatred? Those who act in the name of hatred are no believers. True belief and faith comes from love and God (as one of the names of the same source) accepts all. People and their bruised, unsatisfied, forever hungry egos create these endless dramas ... all in the name of what really? Supposedly as evolved beings one would presume that we would be past all this, but still we continue to behave cave man like - pull each other by the hair and grunt. In this case, burn a bunch of books. Ya right! By this simple act, they are no different than the ones they criticize.

You know many of the first people who heard Jesus say to turn the other check believed that philosophy to be weak also. They chose not to buy into that philosophy. They chose not to follow Jesus.

Those who did/do decide to be followers of Jesus' should do just that. He didn't say turn the other cheek just to hear Himself talk.

There are thousands of religions out there and if the Christian philosophy is not right for you then you should call yourself something else and your hateful actions would not bring shame on a belief system that promotes love of God and our fellow man.

If our school systems would only go back to teaching history properly once again we would be so much better off. Why so shocked about this article? Remember this? -

The Crusades were a series of religiously sanctioned military campaigns waged by much of Latin[ambiguous] Christian Europe, particularly the Franks of France and the Holy Roman Empire. The specific crusades to restore Christian control of the Holy Land were fought over a period of nearly 200 years, between 1095 and 1291. Other campaigns in Spain and Eastern Europe continued into the 15th century. The Crusades were fought mainly by Roman Catholic forces against Muslims who had occupied the near east since the time of the Rashidun Caliphate, although campaigns were also waged against pagan Slavs, pagan Balts, Jews, Russian and Greek Orthodox Christians, Mongols, Cathars, Hussites, Waldensians, Old Prussians, and political enemies of the various popes. Orthodox Christians also took part in fighting against Islamic forces

At that point in time, what evidence did we have that he was a terrorist sympathizer? NONE. Absolutely none. But you didn't need evidence: You had already decided he was a terrorist strictly because he is a Muslim.

Look at your comment below: "They cannot co-exist with their fellow man." You're indicting 1.3 billion people because of the actions of how many?

Of COURSE you say it "looks" like a defense; you can't wait for facts to surface. Like Breitbart, you're ready to indict a person as racist based on two minutes of video rather than the entire 43 minutes. You can't do that, but the minute someone says it's a good idea to get all the facts before casting judgment, you're calling them an apologist.

Wrong. That proves nothing. Where is the connection to terrorists? Where is the connection to the Yemeni cleric?

You need to prove this NOT based on assumption but on fact. Think about what you said: You think anyone who yells, "Praise Jesus" before shooting up an abortion clinic indicts all Christians? You are mischaracterizing based on prejudice. That does not convict in a court of law. In a courtroom you would be thrown out for lack of evidence. That's the evidence I want from you and sorry, it doesn't exist. The substantiated evidence did not begin to surface for five days later. You cannot ascribe guilt based on assumption, only facts. And saying "proven" doesn't cut it. Facts are what cuts it, none of which you have to make your claim. You are losing this argument.

I don't think it takes a back seat, but what should have no seat at the table is the notion that all Muslims are hateful, hate America or want to kill Americans. Some Muslims, but hardly many. Jihad seems to think all of them are culpable. That kind of thinking not only doesn't deserve a seat at the table, it doesn't even belong in the room. But Jihad acts as if that kind of reason can only be harbored by apologists, which of course, is preposterous.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

Building a Mosque - Pass (freedom of religion)
Burning the Koran - Pass (freedom of speach)
Plotting to kill others or destroy their property or carrying out such plans - No Pass

Notice, for the first two you don't have to agree with or like either, but they are acceptable under the constitution.

Yeah Left says: that's why atheist communist regimes have killed over 100 million people throughout history. So atheist have killed far more people than religion ever has.

Common misconception. Communists didn't kill people in the name of atheism; they killed people for the sake of power. Fanatics like Hitler and Lenin weren't engaged in a religious war; they were engaged in power struggles and killed anyone who got in their way --including their own lieutenants.

Actually, you could argue that Stalin's government had all the trappings of religion, including Orwell's totalitarian theocracy, and thus it's merely a play on words to say that it was not religious.

Besides, it's a specious comparison. Of course death tolls in the 20th Century were higher --More people on the planet and more efficient means of killing them than anything in ancient times.
