Of all the gym sports Rochesterians play in their youth there is none more widely recognized as maximizing fun potential than Kickball. A craze for this sport is quickly sweeping over the city as more and more leagues are springing up, seemingly overnight. The most popular is the official KLOR, or Kickball League of Rochester. A tremendous array of players, mostly adult youth spend every night of the week pelting big red rubber balls around various Kickball Venues.
This is not unlike other Gym Game crazes that have swept through youth culture. Dodgeball was fun enough to spark a feature film, and Ultimate Frisbee, always a staple of College Campuses has had its spotlight as well. Kickball tends to elevate itself above these other activities for a few reasons - 1) The absence of a need for any physical ability to play well, 2) Its organized positions and simple rule set and finally 3) The lack of motor skills required that facilitates drunken play. Clearly this game should have caught on mass appeal long ago.
There is even some media concerning kickball, which demonstrates that the fad actually has a wider appeal than bored Rochester 20-somethings. The best episode of The Boondocks this season featured the eponymous Red Ball. It's the kind of intensity that is apparent in all KLOR contests.
