Our culture is pretty weird. Things tend to happen all the time for no apparent reason. Today one of those things happened to the residents of Rochester- the release of AC/DC: Iron Man 2. It seems as though AC/DC's hit from 1980, "Shoot to Thrill" was used in one of the trailers for Iron Man 2, which is apparently enough leeway for the band to release a Greatest Hits Album branded as an Iron Man 2 Soundtrack.

Fellow Examiner Phyllis Pollack has some more good details over here on the album itself as well as history of both the band and film. It's just such an arbitrary meeting of irrelevant rock and one of the Summer's biggest films. Then again, AC/DC music, while thoroughly awesome and jam-worthy, is generally very good soundtrack music, so it's pretty fitting to sidle it along the jet-setting comic action flick.

It's an interesting meld, perhaps some Black Sabbath would be more appropriate though. Other than synching up well in some trailers and the use of "Back in Black" during a stint in the first film, there's not much more rationale for these two media properties to hook up like this. Is it an AC/DC career retrospective full of rare live performances? A simple piece of Iron Man 2 marketing? No song is original or inspired by the film like the Jay-Z American Gangster (2007) joint. It may very well be an entertaining album but it seems as though both band and film are using each others' name to shamelessly sell themselves.
