Experts agree BP oil well casing has failed: Relief wells may not stop Deepwater Horizon oil leak

There is an increasingly real possibility that we may never be able to stop the gushing hole left in the Gulf sea floor unleashed by the Deepwater Horizon.

Former president of Shell oil and founder of Citizens for Affordable Energy, John Hofmeister, told Hardball’s Chris Matthews that the casing that leads to the oil reservoir may be so badly damaged from wear under the extreme pressure, the relief wells will not be able to stop the flow.

Hofmeister said that once the relief wells reach the casing, they will inject cement that should solidify and permanently stop the leak. But if there is not enough casing intact to hold the cement and allow it to set, the last hope in stopping the gusher ends.

Oil industry expert Bob Cavnar agrees. In an interview with Keith Olbermann, Cavnar said ‘there is real damage to the BOP.’ His advice to BP is to “Keep the well flowing as much as they can,” in order to keep the pressure off the ‘down hole.’

Cavnar also said he would not be surprised if the BOP fell over, unless BP installs supports to keep it upright, adding that it needs to be done right now.

Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen confirmed evidence that Cavnar may be right. Allen said, “The riser package is now tilting 10 to12 degrees.”

BP needs to do something quick. They are dragging their feet. Making unstable fixes, and the oil is still gushing out. How much oil is in that rig? Will we ever be able to stop it? Tony Hayward, CEO, doesn't give a damn what is happening. He said when questioned by congress, that the releif oil well suppose to be in place by August, has zero chance of working. It has already destroyed the ecosystem, and is now taking its tole on all the wildlife. This just might be armagedeon. We need to take that oil as payment for them destroying our environment. Until America as a society decides to not drive their cars so much, we won't be so dependent on the oil and fossil fuels. The dipersants they are using, also has consequences. The black oil that is going into the atmosphere, as well as them burning it, along with the disperants, will cause acid rain for years to come. At what cost, for a complete echosystem.I guarantee that everything that is near or in its path, has been destroyed.

I am almost at a loss for words now. I have been following this disaster daily, and my heart is just breaking. I actually stayed up all night long worrying and thinking about what we (the world) are going to do about this. This disaster is going to reach our entire planet, and sooner than we all thought. We're all going to suffer, as a people, because of this, and it seems as if there's nothing we can do to stop it. If these relief wells don't work, do we simply give up and let the oil overtake our planet? What can we possibly do when 1/2, or all, of our oceans are filled with oil? What will certain civilizations do when their main source of food is contaminated and unfit to consume? What will we do? What can we do?

BP should still be able to plug the well off with the relief well. Did you listen carefully? What is with all the fear porn on the internet about this disaster? They should be starting to gain on the oil clean up out there, but a long way to go. Kevin Costner is also cleaning up the water, now; thank God for him and his persistence with those machines. 97-99% pure water returned to the ocean.

they say the only way to stop it is to bomb it...then it cave in.. if so, then why are they continuing to wait on that? afraid they will mess up their wonderful OIL STRUCK sight?? it is all about the money and fear they will loose this site if they bomb it...greed is a deadly thing...and we are seeing it with our very eyes. This is where I blame OBAMA...why has he not said, let's get this stopped right now..bomb the freaking thing and let's go back to living without this worry.. they have already let this go so long that all life in the gulf is pretty much going if not gone already. It is heart breaking...

THE "WHAT IF's",& "DREAMERS" ARE AT WORK. WHY NOT FACE THE FACTS.

    1. Replace the riser - only this time keep it full of drilling mud. The oil flow will be stopped immediately.
2.Then worry about repairing the well.

Thanks for printing my comment - I have been trying for months to get my point across. I have been in the Oil well drilling business for 50 years. I must have learned something of value.

The well head (Tree) is supported by 6 strings of casing. Each spool in the tree represents a casing in the hole- (30",26",22".18",16',7") that has been run into the hole cemented, landed in the head. Pretty strong base. The 7" casing is intact. Oil is not flowing from the inside of the 7" casing but from the outside of it ( The 7" x 16" annulus). This means that the 7" casing gives access to the 9 5/8" liner shoe that Halaburton was supposed to have cemented off. Also the objective of the 2 relief wells now being drilled. Drill Baby drill - don't worry about the spill.

Please stop the Circus – I have spent 40 years in the Oil Well drilling business , both on and offshore, and what I hear makes me sick.” An easy way to solve this fiasco – Follows:

PRESENT SITUATION: Oil is flowing up the 7” x 9 5/8 “ casing annulus (not inside the completion string of 7” casing). The 7” completion string has been pressure tested to 10,000 psi and is full access to the bottom of the 9 5/8” liner shoe. (The destination of both relief wells).

SOLUTION: 1. Move a drilling rig over the well.
    2. Detach the existing riser stub.
    3. Install a new riser (Only this time, have the riser filled with proper Weight drilling mud). (This can be accomplished by plugging the riser and keeping it full of mud as it is being run.
    4. Drill out the riser plug – the drilling mud will kill the well. Now you are bba ca

    Bp solution continued:
    4. Drill out the riser plug – the drilling mud will kill the well. Now you are back in the drilling business. Run into the 7’ casing and shoot holes opposite the 9 5/8” liner shoe and lay a cement bridging plug in the annulus. Several liners have been used instead of full lengths of casing to the surface. You may have to perforate the 7” casing opposite these liners and re-cement them in place.
    5. Temporarily abandon the hole with a string of tubing to total depth.
    6. Note: If the locking mechanism on the existing riser stub can not be activated – replace the top spool in the tree head. The oil flow during this operation will be no different then the original flow.
    7. Good Luck – Daddy have you plugged the hole?

No one is talking about this much on Facebook or at work, it seems maybe at heart no one wants to accept that this could be more that we thought at first. I hope it's not as bad as I think it is, it could cause a change in the eco system that could trigger a famine or a world economic disaster of Biblical proportions. I want to be wrong about this. My heart is broken about the loss, it is like watching a slow murder. There is nothing in Revelation 8:8 that is not appropo to this oil gusher. I was hoping I would never have to see something like this in my lifetime. I hope they cap it and get it cleaned up.

Damage to casing is not a big problem (If damage exists ). There are 6 sterings of casing in the well.
Put herser back on the well heaD - ONLY THIS TIME HAVE IT FILLED WITH DRILLING MUD" 12# MUD = 4332 PSI. tHIS WILL KILL THE FLOW.

I wonder when Americans will finally realise they exist in a war zone. Their beloved country is under assault by communist Zionists which have taken over the control hierarchy at all levels. The Obama administration represents the capstone of this incursion that's now in full swing.

My Friends, I have given up on my attempt to shut down the BP Oil Spill. The last several months have been a waste of time. There seems to be to many people who want the spill to continue, and I am frustrated to the point of giving up; however, I am satisified that I have tried my best. My expertise was not refused in WW2 and here we are with 50 years of oil well drilling engineering expertise and must step aside for the real "experts". Good Luck
