Hoping to smooth things over by making nice, lame-duck republican Senator Bob Bennett endorsed republican senate candidate Mike Lee on Friday after Lee beat Tim Bridgewater by 2% - a mere 4,000 votes - in Tuesday's primary.
When asked about endorsing Lee two days ago, Bennett balked, saying he wanted to speak with Lee first. Bennett has described the race that knocked him out of the senate after three terms as one of the nastiest in Utah political history. Bennett lost to Lee and Bridgewater at the Utah GOP Convention held May 8th in Salt Lake City.
Bridgewater endorsed Lee on Thursday in a statement. He congratulated the candidate, and encouraged Lee to "champion a dramatic cut in out of control government spending."
Democratic senate candidate Sam Granato urges republicans to consider his candidacy. "We are all Utahns, and, in the end, I believe our many shared values far outweigh our few differences. Our state needs a senator who will give all Utahns a voice in Washington," said Granato. "And I intend to be that voice."
