Video: Fox News continues to claim the recent snowstorms disprove global warming

Lately on Fox News it seems that every weather update is followed by a snipe at global warming.  Most recently Fox & Friends brought up global warming after discussing the recent Mid-Atlantic blizzard and the upcoming D.C. snowstorm.  According the Fox & Friends hosts the snowstorms seem to disprove the global warming theory because more snow = no warming.

Climate change scientists and liberals argue that the skeptic's argument greatly oversimplifies things.

First climate change theory encompasses broad weather changes measured in years and decades not on the most recent weather report.  Assuming some snowstorms disprove global warming would be equilevant to building an outdoor pool in Minnesota when the temperature gets above 70 degrees one day.

Secondly contrary to the Fox News logic most climate change scientists believe that global warming will bring about more extreme weather events including large snowstorms.  Scientists never predicted that the earth would warm enough to rid ourselves of winter and snow.  Instead they have argued that the earth would warm a few degrees allowing us to keep our seasonal patterns.  At the same time the increased temperatures allow the air to hold more moisture.  This increased moisture will logically lead to more precipitation including during the winter when such precipitation takes the form of snow or ice.  So to to liberals the video and photos below actually lend support to the global warming theory.

    Ryan,

C'mon Bud!! The whole REASON that "Global Warming" was changed to "Climate Change" was so folks like YOU can claim that every unusual weather event is proof positive of Global warming.

I suppose you DON'T think the heat wave in Europe in 2003 was related to Global War.. err Climate Change, right?

Because if a cold event that happens in winter ISN'T related to the "so called" temperture stagnation and decline since 1998... well, then that SAME logic ~MUST~ be applied to hot weather events that happen in the summer, no?

Doc Navy: It may or may not have been related. The overall point is that you can't use regional weather events over a few days to disprove OR prove global warming. Instead look to the larger data. Despite accusations of skeptics the OVERALL data shows an increasing temperature over the long term. In addition ask any meteorologist and they will tell you warm air holds more water than cold air. So both the heat wave and blizzards are CONSISTENT with global warming theory though I agree with you that neither PROVES the theory. The proof behind the theory is better documented by the measurement of increased CO2 in the atmosphere along with increasing temperatures over the past few decades.

Global climate change presents a serious national security threat which could impact Americans at home, impact United States military operations and heighten global tensions, according to a new study released by a blue-ribbon panel of retired admirals and generals from all branches of the armed services.

The study, “National Security and the Threat of Climate Change,” explores ways projected climate change is a threat multiplier in already fragile regions, exacerbating conditions that lead to failed states — the breeding grounds for extremism and terrorism.

Considering that reliable thermometer readings only go back as far as the late 1860s, and sattelite readings start 1978, with radiosonde going all the way back to 1958... umm what's your definition of long term?

AGW deniers have the same mentality (and ideological motivation) as Creationists, who cite any gaps in the fossil record as debunking evolution. Creationists have been ignoring big-picture evidence for 150 years, so AGW deniers are unlikely to go away soon. These people are motivated by an archaic, ego-centric world-view where human are more important than nature, and can safely ignore its laws (e.g. thermodynamics). No amount of evidence you present to them will get past their dogma. Hopelessly, willfully ignorant, and more dangerous than ever in this crowded world.

Snow is a convergence of cold temperatures and moisture, and proves nothing about cold itself. For snow to fall, you only need 32 degrees Fahrenheit and the right conditions. Many clear days are colder than overcast ones, since clouds produce their own greenhouse effect over local areas.

Still, the average denier troglodyte will witness any clear, colder-than-usual day and make the same tired claims. They won't admit that winter is caused by Earth's axial tilt and will always be with us.

Scientists never said winter would vanish, and the opposite hemisphere experiences summer all the while. Projected global warming is relatively subtle, but sufficient to cause major latitude shifts in climate. You can never explain to shallow-thinkers that subtle, slow changes are worrisome. They only understand bodies in the street overnight.

Correct! But you cannot use 450,000 years either! Thats as far back as we go! When the Earth is BILLIONS of years old a few hundred thousand should not be enough either.

But truth and fact is when around 12000 years ago Pennsylvania north was under MILES of ice, and it melted and receded and has allowed us mere modern humans to populate New Your and more. Without the warming we would not be here at all.

Global warming is real. Period. Some call it climate change...because, those who are simplistic in their thinking don't get that more warming...evaporation: and a cold front, makes snow. Here is Oregon...flowers are blooming: in February. Our snowpack is low...bad for irrigation, drinking water sources and salmon. NASA just reported the warmest decade in the last century was 2000-2009. Someone above asked what is long term? How about 600,000 years of ice cores and CO2 levels? (280 ppm for centuries...now, it is 390 ppm?). Long enough for you?

Lastly, hurricanes/storms are becoming more intense(greater rainfall/snow events/drought events). Sean Hannity tried to dupe people last year...when Georgia had cold temperatures in the spring. Then, two weeks later...Georgia had record warmth...Hannity said nothing. Why are some of you afraid of science...and by the way...saying the same soundbytes over and over means nothing. Global warming/climate change is undeniable.

And this is evidence FOR global warming!? IF this is satire, very funny, if not, ??!!

If you followed the now discredited global warming theory as put forth by IPCC,CRU,Al Gore and other reputable sources, it was all about Positive Fedback Loops- no sane scientist ever contended a tiny trace of Co2 would cause disaster on it's own!

The main one was of course 'albedo' whereby more warmth begets less snow, less energy reflection, more warmth etc

Also the 'more moisture' line is hilarious, snow also needs COLD-
the ave temp in DC this time of year is 45F! Not to get too scientific for environmentalists- but global warming should be causing more rain, not snow!

I'm the one who asked what is considered "long term", and since you seem to think you can play with the big boys...

What EXCATLY are you implying, that 600,000 years of ~PROXY~ CO2 readings in some way show that Mankind has caused the warming of the Globe since 1850? Or that Mankind was responsible for the warming in the 1930s, or the warming from 1985-1998?

From what I have seen and read from the Vostok Ice Core data (the most widely used set) temperature changes PRECEED CO2 changes by 800-1000 years. Therefore, unless CO2 possesses some magical properties in which it is able to transmit it's effects backwards in time... CO2 ~cannot~ drive temperature. At least according to your precious ice core data.

Next, please explain to me EXACTLY the link between the ~possible~ human caused rise of 95ppm in CO2 from 1850 (Approx 280ppm +/- 10ppm) and the .6c rise in temperatures.

I've read Arrhenius, both his first paper and his second and they don't give a link.

The fact that temp increases raise Co2 levels (decreases ocean's capacity to store Co2) is in itself good evidence that the opposite does not occur to any significant degree.

Just for the record... "runaway" positive feedbacks in natural physics is EXTREMELY rare, were talking stuff like stars, blackholes, quazars, etc... The universe is necessarily dominated by negative feedbacks. An example of a Manmade runaway positive feedback is a thermonuclear explosion.

That said, there is also NO SUCH THING as a "tipping point" in this planets climate. Considerinig that, as another poster pointed out, ice core samples show that our atmosphere once contained 17x more CO2 than now, and not only was that period of time in conjunction with an EXPLOSION of varied life on this planet... we didn't turn into venus. (which WOULD be an example of a series of events that caused a "runaway" chain reaction in climate. Event that could never happen here on Earth.)

THE IMPACT OF EL NINO ON THE CLIMATE OVER NORTH AMERICA IS USUALLY GREATEST DURING THE LATE WINTER SEASON. MANY PREDICTION TOOLS INDICATE THAT THE EL NINO IS CURRENTLY NEAR ITS MAXIMUM STRENGTH AND WILL DIMINISH SLIGHTLY IN THE NEXT FEW MONTHS.
