Pakistani government: "Jesus Christ" is vulgar, obscene, and harmful

The Vatican news agency Agenzia Fides is reporting that the Pakistani government is banning the phrase "Jesus Christ" from being texted.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued an order to all national cell phone service providers that there now exists a listing of 1,600 strictly verboten words and phrases deemed vulgar, obscene, and harmful.

To clarify the rationale for the directive, the PTA stated that the freedom of Pakistanis is "subject to the limitations provided by the law, in the interest of the glory of Islam."

The Constitution of Pakistan states that "every citizen shall have the right to profess, practise and propagate his religion."

Fr. John Shakir Nadeem of the Pakistani Catholic Bishops Conference said "The Catholic Church of Pakistan will make all necessary pressures on the government to eliminate the name of Christ from the prohibited list. We understand the desire to protect the minds of young people, indicating a list of obscene words."

Father Nadeem went on to state, "But why include the name of Christ? What is obscene? Banning it is a violation of our right to evangelize..."
