Today the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a new study on the danger of second hand smoke. Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of death, disease, and disability in the US.
The statistics are astonishing.
- Around 443,000 people die from smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke.
- Around 8.6 million suffer from a serious illness from smoking.
Despite the statistics, 46.6 million adults in the US still smoke, exposing 88 million nonsmokers to secondhand smoke.
Some of the CDC’s latest findings:
- Even brief exposure to secondhand smoke can be harmful to health.
- Children of parents who smoke are twice as likely to become smokers.
- Despite local smoke-free laws, more than 1 in 2 Americans are not protected by smoke-free laws where they live.
Their final findings are quite simple. Just quit. For help quitting call 1-800-QUIT-NOW (800-784-8669; TTY 800-332-8615).
