Tattooed cats are scandalous new trend in Russia (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

A disturbing new trend has surfaced in Russia: cat owners getting their felines tattooed with elaborate, colorful designs.

A young Russian woman, Oksana Popova, had her rare Canadian Hairless cat Mickey put under general anesthesia for three hours while an image of King Tut was etched onto the cat's chest.

The tattoo artist Anatoly Keksel performed the work at his TattoonHamon Tattoo Parlor in Russia.

"I wanted something new and different for the times we live in," Popova explains.

"I have the same tattoo," boasts Keksel, lifting up his shirt.

The practice has infuriated animal rights activists in Russia, such as  Irina Novozhilova.

"The ethical thinking about animals in Russia lacks behind that of the West," says Nozozhilova. "People in Russia mostly buy animals for selfish reasons and anything that happens to them afterwards is a consequence of that."

We are totally against using animals for purely cosmetic reasons just on the owner's whim. Clearly the animal has no say in the matter.

We do not believe in using pets as fashion accessories. It shows no respect for the animal whatsoever.

So far we have only heard about this practice happening overseas - and we hope it doesn't spread.

Disturbing indeed. She 'wanted something new and different for the times we live in"? First of all - huh??? What does that even mean? And second, the best she could think of for 'new and different' was to tattoo her poor cat? Not to mention third - howzabout spending that time and $ saving the life of one of the many miserable homeless kitties trying to make it through the Russian winters? Aaaarrrgh. Thanks for covering this story, Helena.

Stupidity + too much time and money = tattooed cats. Of all the frivolous things that the rich amuse themselves with this has to be one of the most pointless and stupid!

I think this person bizzarely seems to be trying to impress others by having something different in the superficial shallow world they obviously live in. The only people that would be impressed by the unnatural tattoing of an animal are airheads! An animal is a living, feeling being and should be treated with respect and not used as a fashion item. Poor cat hasnt even got hair like he/she should have. She has made herself look like a little twerp to intelligent people, so well done! Do something good for animals with your money and dont spoil or change their natural appearance. They are beautiful looking naturally, its absurd behaviour!

Did you see how miserable that cats face looked in the last few seconds of the film?? Its disgusting how they treat those animals ( I'm guessing the only reason they put it under general anesthesia is so the cat doesn't f*** up the tattoo, otherwise they prob wouldn't even bother giving it to the cat... selfish )

Well that has to be up there in the top 10 of the truly most disgusting things I've ever seen.

I have more than one tattoo and I dare say I'll have more done yet but I'd never dream of inflicting that on an innocent animal ... people doing that to animals should be locked up ... that or shot.

Animal abuse! i love tatoos and have many myself....but this is going beyond the animal's purpose in life. They don't understand the concept and wake up from anesthesia completely confised. Completely unacceptable.

WOW thats very cruel indeed. if you want to get a small tattoo on your cats ear so if it gets lost then go for it but that was just wrong that poor animal must have been in pain and had to have had trouble sleeping for at least a week. i have many tattoos and i love my animals dearly and could never put them through the pain of tattooing ever!

No different than neutering, spaying, cropping ears, docking tails, or microchipping. Pet owners cut their pets hair to look a certain way, even dye them. Tattooing is only painful during the procedure, in which animals are put to sleep, which is the same procedure they use for doing dental work on animals. Mind your own business, to each their own, but overall it is not cruelty.

  • Sue Luckham 1 year ago

Yes it is cruelty...what sort of person are you to say it isn't cruel, were you there and did you watch the video? No animal is put on this earth to be tattooed, and yes to each his own, but at least we have a choice!!
I have no wish to be rude, but you have no knowledge of animals have you?? If you did you would not have made that crass comment.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

It is NOT painful only during the procedure but AFTER as well, and for days! Have you ever got a tattoo? It KILLS after.. not to mention the itching, and the risk of infection.

  • A.DaY 2 years ago

That is abuse cause the animal has no say in it, Spaying and neutering is a different process all together. A tattoo, c'mon now. Thats just idiotic anyway. Has Humans become so bored with their lives. If you have a "PET" it should be treated as a member of your family. Giving what it needs Food, Shelter, and Love, and the decision to choose and I high doubt if they had the means to choose, it would not want a tattoo, Animals are much smarter than human beings in the image section, where they do not care what they look like, they are confident no matter what society thinks of them and build they're confidence from the love they receive, Unlike the f'd up minds of humans now a days.....

No mention of a vet being involved. Is it legal for someone other than a vet to put an animal under anesthesia in Russia? In the US, the drugs used for that purpose are controlled substances.

I'm sorry but it has to be said, that is a diabolical thing to do to a cat, or any animal for that matter. Just for the sake of looking good! I feel there should be a law against it, and anyone caught breaking it, prosecuted and banned from owning pets! There is NO reason in this world why anyone should be so INHUMANE towards an animal, it's disgusting it really is. If I EVER saw someone do that to an animal I would tattoo their eyes and see how they like it. Tattoos are for humans, the only thing close to an animal tattoo is animal branding for farmers so they know where their livestock is. This is NOT a new trend, it is a cruel and disgusting trend.

Animal abuse! Going under has it's risk, why put an animal through that for cosmetic reasons? Cats have small livers, havng to process the anestesia is taxing and the ink can be toxic! Wrong!
