Persians, named after their country of origin, are the number one breed in popularity. They are easy to recognize because of their long flowing coats, which require a daily grooming with a metal comb. A well-bred Persian is a hardy and healthy cat but requires annual veterinary visits. However, a daily face wash is recommended for the tearing that can occur. It's recommended that Persians be kept indoors.
Exotic Shorthairs look like a Persian cat but require less daily grooming as the coat will not mat or tangle. The exotics have a thick, dense, plush, short coat which gives that soft and rounded look without the maintenance. Male Exotics seem to be more affectionate than females. Females can be somewhat more aloof. Exotic kittens advance earlier than other breeds in general. including open their eyes, climbing, eating. They are both playful and chill cats.
Ragdolls are known for their captivating blue eyes. They are very laid back and bred to be a larger sized cat. The semi long coat is plush and silky, and requires minimal grooming. They have no undercoat which keeps shedding and matting to a minimum. Ragdolls are very affectionate and interested in spending time with humans. The Ragdoll is a gentle cat and often plays without extending its claws.
The Himalayan was bred with the goal of developing a long-haired, Persian-bodied cat with the color-points of the Siamese. The Himalayan should have a round head, small round-tipped ears and large, round, wide-set eyes. They are short with stubby legs and large round feet. At birth the kittens are pure white or cream. They develop their points as they mature in age. Himalayans are little bundles of energy. It is recommended to wear them out with play before bedtime, if you like sleep.
An extreme opposite to those above, the Rex breeds coat is very short and lies close to the body. It is incredibly soft to the touch, often described as velvet or silk. Rex breeds have large ears on a comparatively small, egg-shaped head with high cheekbones. Cornish Rex does shed minimally. They want to participate with the family and have been known to "toss" things and catch them. They are active cats whose kitten-like antics keep them young forever.
