CAIRO - In a televised speech on Egyptian state TV Friday, Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq confirmed that President Hosni Mubarak will not step down.
"We as civilized people must honor the president, who did a good job regardless of mistakes here and there," Shafiq said. "Today the Egyptian people see that the president will not step down."
After meeting at the White House with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper on Friday, President Barack Obama made a televised statement asking the Egyptian government to begin its transition process now.
Obama thanked the Egyptian government for its restraint today as tens of thousands of protesters filled Tahrir square during Islam’s day of prayer.
"The whole world is watching," Obama said. “This is obviously still a fluid situation, and we're monitoring it closely.”
The Egyptian military is still out in force to prevent further clashes.
