Jordan Tebbutt leads balanced scoring attack as Hawks prey over Gervais

The top ranked Horizon Christian Hawks boys basketball team continues to steam roll the competition in Oregon’s 3A ranks.  The Hawks shrugged off a slow start to quickly dispatch of the Gervais Cougars 67-30 on Tuesday night in Tualatin.

The game’s first two minutes were abnormally low scoring with both teams tied at two, but the Hawks changed that in a hurry as Head coach Dave Brown made a little adjustment.

“(Gervais) was going with there delay game and we were in man so we were chasing them all over the floor.  So we switched to our trap”, stated Brown.

The adjustment was too much for the visiting Cougars to handle.  Sophomore wing, Michael Loomis harassed the Gervais guards into turning the ball over and dished the ball ahead to Junior Jordan Tebbutt who finished uncontested at the other end on successive trips down the floor to put the Hawks up 6-2.  That ignited a 16-0 run for Horizon Christian the rest of the opening quarter, with the Hawks up 18-2.

It was more of the same in the second quarter as the Hawks second unit came on the floor, playing the entire eight minutes.  It started with Sophomore Calvin Anderson taking the ball from his elder brother Kyle, for an easy lay-in to make it 20-2.

Moments later, Senior point guard, Shane Monahan came away with a steal and drove the ball to the rack to push the lead to 20.   Then as Gervais tried to inbound the ball, Calvin Anderson had other ideas, snatching the ball under the basket and putting it up and in for a 24-2 Hawks lead.  Calvin finished with eight points.  The Anderson brothers combined to score 13 points and grab 12 rebounds for the Hawks.

On the Hawks next possession, Loomis had the ball down low and passed to Austin King cutting to  the hoop, for his only two points.  That put Horizon Christian ahead by three touchdowns at 28-7.

The Hawks outscored Gervais 22-6 in the third quarter, building a 32 point lead at 55-13 heading to the final quarter.  The Cougars finally managed to break double digit scoring in the fourth quarter in “garbage time”, but it wasn’t nearly enough.

Tebbutt paced a balanced Hawks scoring effort with 14 points.  Reserve forward, Fernando Barrett chipped in 10 points and Sophomore Wyatt Houston pumped in 8 points to go along with four rebounds.  The Anderson brothers, Kyle and Calvin, led the Hawks rebounding with six each.  Horizon Christian severely out rebounded the much shorter Cougars 30-16.  The Hawks tallied 17 assists on 27 made baskets.

Horizon Christian extends its win streak to seven straight improving its West Valley League record to 7-0 and 13-3 overall.  They will host Amity on Friday night at 7:30pm
