Chatari Jones, 12 years-old with cerebral palsy, spoke with Matt Lauer with calmness, maturity and not without tears as she discussed how she was bullied on her school bus.
With her parents by her side, Chatari bravely spoke of being attacked verbally and having condoms thrown on her. Watching this can bring any parent to tears.
Her father, James Jones made national headlines as he went on a tirade on the bus to defend his daughter. Like most father's, James Jones couldn't take his daughter being hurt like this. James Jones in no way condones his actions, and almost immediately made a public apology.
He was later arrested and charged for obstruction of justice. It was only a short time after this event hit the national media buzz when a mother, Morgan Ryder, in the state of Washington created a Facebook Group, We Support James Jones, grew from only a hundred supporters to literally thousands.
James Jones told Matt Lauer he is “just an average dad protecting his daughter.” This message is clear with the number of people throughout the country supporting him. Making it clear, it wasn't right, however completely understandable the rage he felt when his daughter was being harmed.
Chatari's mother said that her daughter had complained about these kids just a day before this incident. Most kids are not likely to tell their parents, Chatari not only told her parents, she is willing to try to ride the bus again. She is not a victim, she is a survivor and someone we should all look up to.
October National Bullying Prevention Month. The National Center for Bullying Prevention has reported that 85% of children with disabilities are bullied.
