Michael Brewer: A year after nearly being burned to death speaks out on Today

It was one year ago today (October 12th) when South Florida, Broward County was splashed all over our media outlets.  15 year-old Michael Brewer was doused in alcohol and set on fire by other teens.  Why?  Allegedly over $40.00 and a bicycle!  Bullying and school violence is escalating.  It is up to our communities to step up and step into schools and neighborhoods to put a stop to this malicious behavior.

Today Michael Brewer is a survivor and thriving as he recently celebrated his 16th birthday!  In celebration he also finished his extensive rehab at the Ryder Trauma Center.  Although relieved he doesn't have to go back, he and his family are extremely grateful for the caring and professional staff that helped heal Michael back to health.

Valerie Brewer, Michael's mother, said about the Ryder Truama Center,  "They became a very important part of our lives," mother Valerie Brewer said. "They shared our laughter, our heartache. It was an emotional time to say goodbye."

It was a  tough and sometime grueling recovery, however he is now enjoying going back to his sports such as skateboarding, baseball, biking and basketball.

The initial prognosis was grim. However after 73 days, Michael Brewer beat all odds as he was released from the hospital after having over 65% of his body burned.

Doctors and others describe Michael Brewer's recovery as remarkable Michael Brewer credits the support of his family, friends, community as well as prayers and the belief he would get better.

Michael Brewer's grandmother, Reenie, encourages others to love each other no matter what their differences are.  The world is full of unique people and embracing differences can broaden your horizon to relate to all people.  Parents need to be the example and set the example to their children.  Teaching tolerance and empathy is part of parenting.

The three teens that are charged in this case, Matthew Bent, Denver Jarvis and Jesus Mendez were charged as adults with attempted second-degree murder and are awaiting trial.
