Kimberley Swann and her facebook page - I'm guessing she
is now thinking before she writes anything new!
Like many teens, Kimberley Swann has a Facebook account. And like many teens, she also has a boring job which she often complained about. Her first mistake was writing up some of those complaints on her Facebook page.
Her second mistake was adding some of her new co-workers in as “friends”, allowing them access to everything she had written. Apparently at least one of these co-workers found it necessary to pass on some of her comments to their boss, Stephen Ivell. And apparently Ivell didn’t find her comments from her “first day at work. omg !! So dull” to other remarks about the menial tasks she was given, good reading.
Swann was called into Ivell's office where she was told, "'I have seen your comments on Facebook and I don't want my company being in the news.” She was told it was not good for the company, fired and escorted from the premises in Clacton-on-Sea, Essex.
Swann is upset and as only a 16 year old can, complained: "I just put that my job was boring. They were just being nosy, going through everything. I think it is really sad, it makes them look stupid that they are going to be so petty.
Right or wrong, it has, and will continue to happen over and over. I always tell my kids that if they wouldn’t want something plastered on the front page of our local paper, they should NOT write it on a social website! I can only hope it is something that sticks and they learn to think before they write. But sadly, I doubt that my kids (or Kimberley Swann) would think for a minute that writing how dull their jobs are would get them in trouble, let alone cause them to lose their job but, obviously it can.

I am always amazed at what people (not only teens) on these sites and the pictures they put up! Really who wants to see a picture of a sloppy drunk or read about a teen whinning about a job she is lucky to have? And yet, they keep printing it!
"It makes them look stupid" she says? No, dear... not them. So funny!
she's a moron. this will serve as a lesson!
Great article and if we could teach every one to think before they did everything - we's all have less problems!
that is their fault for being nosy not hers. its a social networking site, not her company's website
I worked for resturant and a few months after I began working there and started knowing some of my CO-workers I began adding them to facebook and a similar thing happened. I had put something in my status about work and he told me that that was inappropriate and bad for his bussiness. 4 months later I was fired for "poor customer service and being rude" which if you would know me I am not rude and I had some people who thought I provided great customer service I truly believe part of the reason for my being canned was because my comment on facebook.
When will people figure out how to use Facebook's friend lists and privacy controls?!? There is now the option to group all of your work friends into 1 group, and then restrict them from your private musings and tagged pictures from the weekend's drunken festivities. It literally takes 2 minutes to ensure that you don't get fired, and that your boss never knows you "are bored at work and would rather watch grass grow." Facebook even lets you put people into a group simultaneous to the friend request so that there is no chance of them sneaking a peek before you restrict them. I see most people don't bother to change their privacy controls, but I monitor mine strictly because my personal life is mine that I choose to share with my friends, but not everyone. I suggest anyone with facebook take a look into their privacy settings....
You know I just don't get the whole facebook thing. I joined because my friends went on and on about it but with school, lessons, part time job and sports I just don't have the time! Like I want to spend it on facebook over face to face activities with real people!
Hi Kristy,
Great article, as always. I've cautioned my teen to be careful not only on what she posts, but on who she adds as friends. Still, the boss's reaction seems a little over the top in this case. As my fifteen-year-old daughter put it, "That was a real jerk move from him." I couldn't have put it better myself.

Occasionally, teen comments need to be taken with a grain of salt. Not everything said by a 16-year old needs to be so noteworthy especially to her boss(es). I believe he would be shocked to find out what may be said, face to face, between other teens working for him, not just on facebook. I say let the teens vent a little bit of it so they don't build it all up inside and bring it to the workplace.
What nonsense. All this teaches people is to hide their thoughts and expressions. If you have something to say, say it. If your boss doesn't like what you have to say, tough. There's a little something called "Freedom of opinion and expression", in Canada at least. I guess Americans don't really have freedom of speech?
Got something to say?
