MEMPHIS, Tenn., Aug. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- September 9, 2009 marks the first ever National School Spirit Day and cheerleaders nationwide will attempt to set a new world record for number of community service hours performed.

Varsity, the worldwide leader in organized cheerleading, created National School Spirit Day to encourage cheerleaders and their peers to make a difference in their schools and their communities.

"Cheerleaders are often the most hardworking athletes at school," said John Newby, senior vice president and general manager at Varsity. "They raise funds for their own expenses and are very involved in raising money for charities and causes. National School Spirit Day is a way to shine a spotlight on their accomplishments and their natural propensity to serve."

This summer, Varsity helped more than 325,000 cheerleaders at its cheerleading camps prepare for National School Spirit Day. Varsity suggested that cheerleaders make a difference by taking on large community service projects or by performing small acts of kindness.

"If each of the more than 400,000 high school cheerleaders across the country spends just one hour in service to her or his community, the impact of their service will be felt nationwide," said Jeff Webb, founder and CEO of Varsity.

How Cheerleaders Plan to Serve:

-- The Universal Cheerleaders Association will attempt to set a world record for service by performing 90,090 hours of community service by September 9. Participants are already logging hours served at uca.varsity.com. -- The National Cheerleaders Association is an official sponsor of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Each year, at NCA camps nationwide, the NCA encourages teams to develop the "lead" in cheerLEADer" by giving back to their communities through service projects. This year, NCA cheerleaders will raise funds for local Make-A-Wish chapters and grant wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions. -- The United Spirit Association will honor U.S. military heroes by encouraging cheerleading teams to hold Friday night pep rallies across the country in celebration of those bravely serving our country.

As a reward for the cheerleaders' hard work and generous hearts, Inside Cheerleading Magazine will feature the inspiring stories of 10 cheerleading teams in its December issue and on its website. For more information, please visit www.nationalschoolspiritday.org.

Some examples of ways cheerleaders can serve include:

-- Visit a nursing home and perform simple cheers for the residents -- Offer to clean up the school grounds - pull weeds, pick up trash, plant flowers, tear down old signs -- Get involved with the Make-A-Wish Foundation -- Raise funds for a Varsity supported charity such as the Muscular Dystrophy Association's Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon, or a charity of your squad's choice. Have a car wash or bake sale for example. -- Seek permission to visit young patients at a children's hospital to help brighten their day -- Offer to walk a sick, senior or disabled neighbor's dog -- Read to younger schoolchildren - for inspiration, visit http://cheereader.com for ideas on running a reading project -- Teach cheers at a local day care center -- Dust off the trophy cases for all of the school's teams and make sure they reflect everyone's accomplishments
