Online Poker Scandal: Poker bots caught after winning $58k at PokerStars

One of the poker community’s biggest fears was confirmed this week when it was uncovered that not only were Poker Bots being used at PokerStars –and therefore it’s likely they are being used at Full Tilt Poker, Cake Poker, Party Poker, and elsewhere—but more importantly they were winning!

When 2+2 member ‘malloc’ noted some strange similarities in the play of three opponents –most notably that they moved up in stakes at the same time—he went public on the popular online poker forum, and at that point pokertableratings.com got involved, and discovered it was 10 accounts, not 3 that were involved. PTR data-mines many of the online poker sites and therefore has extensive databases on just about every online poker player. When PokerStars was confronted with evidence they quickly froze the suspected accounts and held their own internal investigation.
The 10 accounts implicated were: 7emenov, bakabar, craizer, mvra, nakseon, kozzin, demidou, koldan, Daergy, and feidmanis. The accounts played a massive 8.3 million hands of No Limit Holdem at stakes between $.25/$.50 and $1/$2, and managed to earn $58,000 in profits alone –a number which could effectively be over $50,000 more when you factor in VIP benefits and other deals.
Not only did the bots move up in stakes at the same time, but they also logged in at the same time, and had virtually identical player statistics. Of particular note was a strange betting pattern when the bots got a free ride in the Big Blind. In these cases the bots either shoved all-in when they had a hand, or took a stab at the pot when they missed and then shut down, folding to any raise or subsequent bet. The chances of 10 particular players taking this line are astronomical, since it’s an easily exploitable strategy, and a long-term losing play.
The confiscated funds are being used to compensate players who were affected by the poker bots, and PokerStars is launching a site-wide investigation in an attempt to determine if this is a widespread problem.
Online poker players have always dismissed bots as simplistic, and unable to be long-term winners, but now the technology seems to be catching up. Poker bots that can handily beat $50-$200 buy-in NLHE games is definitely a major concern for the online poker community. This is just another example of why we need to regulate online poker. If we had a regulated industry the offending player(s) could be prosecuted, instead of just having funds confiscated while they move on to the next online poker site learning to avoid detection from their previous mistakes.

poker bots have been in poker since 2000 they only recently have gotten good.. I have used several bots accross all sites and never thought there would be a day that a bot could beat anything above 1c-2c no limit but now i know for a fact that bots are out there that can beat up to 1-2 no limit... the rooms and the people should just except them there never gonna go away its a constant tug of war between programmer and poker room , the bot users dont feel its cheating its just a program that plays solid poker it dosnt offer any kind of house edge and is still prone to bad beats.... certain rooms i wolnt mention have thousands of these bots and pretty much 75 percent of the micro no limit games are bots thats why the poker rooms do nothing do u really wanna lose a thousand players? on one site... Poker stars is the hardest to bot on and has been a stay away from many botters but know this owning a poker bot and winning consistantly is harder then becoming a good player.. A bot owner has to buy software and winning profiles and spend years testing theorys and databases against profiles, all in the meanwhile still bankrolling the bot its a long journey that some love... If you wanna know more about the uprise of these things for future articles contact me at mikedolt@hotmail.com
