India is preparing for possible war with China and Pakistan

Tensions have flared between both China and India militaries along their disputed 2,175 mile-long border, with both sides alleging more frequent troop incursions in recent weeks. China is upset when the Indian prime minister recently visit the disputed region. China considers an Indian-occupied piece of it’s own Tibetan Autonomous Region, has added flames to the fire.

China of course already deeply resents the fact that the top Tibetan leader, and several hundred thousand exiled Tibetans, are allowed to reside in India.

India’s Maoist rebels are now present in 20 states and have evolved into a potent and lethal insurgency. In the last four years, the Maoists have killed more than 900 Indian security officers. Indian leaders are now preparing to deploy nearly 70,000 paramilitary officers to hunt down the guerrillas. The Maoists, however, do not want to secede or be absorbed. Their goal is to topple the system.

India’s rapid economic growth has made it an emerging global power but also deepened stark inequalities in society. Maoists accuse the government of trying to push tribal groups off their land to gain access to raw materials and have sabotaged roads, bridges and even an energy pipeline.

India is preparing the military for possible war with China and Pakistan. India and Russia have agreed two military pacts, including a 10-year deal on weapons, aircraft, and maintenance contracts potentially worth at least $5 billion, Indian defense officials said. India plans to spend $30 billion over the next five years to buy modern weapons systems and attack planes.

The agreement will certainly help as Russia needs a market and India needs a strategic reassurance to sort out relations that were going sour. India also wants to use the renewed focus on Russia as a counterweight to China, while a strong presence in South Asia could help Moscow keep an eye on China. India fears China is trying to encircle it as they jostle for resources and global influence.
China is a greater anxiety for Russia in the long run and politically it is desirable for India to strengthen relations with Russia

China has boosted military spending by more than 10 percent annually for almost two decades, and the official figure of $71 billion this year is thought by many analysts to represent only a portion of total defense spending. China announced plans to boost military spending by 14.9 percent this year, maintaining a longtime trend of annual double-digit percentage increases that have stirred concern in Washington and among Beijing's neighbors.

China and India have taken a vituperative war of words and diplomatic barbs to an unusual level of tension in recent days, prompting fears that the traditional rivalry between the two Asian giants could spin out of control.

"The most urgent present job for both sides is crisis management," says Han Hua, an expert on South Asia at Peking University. "I don't think either government wants the situation to go further downhill."

The recent angry exchanges were prompted by a decades-old border dispute over which the two countries went to war in 1962, and which has proved impervious to 13 rounds of negotiations since.

But deeper resentments lie behind the spat, says Shen Dingli, deputy head of China's South Asia Research Institute. "The structural problem is leadership," he argues. "The question is who leads in Asia?"

The United States’ policies on Pakistan and China are harming India's security interests, the Hindustan Times quoted former Indian national security adviser Brajesh Mishra as saying on Saturday.

“While China is supporting Pakistan’s military for reasons well known, India’s friend the US, has also been pursuing policies for the past eight years which have the same adverse impact on India,” he said at the HT Leadership Summit.

Mishra called for raising the level of police infrastructure in India and pointed to China’s strident approach on Arunachal Pradesh for the past two years.

“The situation has changed in the last two years. India has fought many wars, but two fronts were never simultaneously active in the past. In the next five years, however, I will not rule out that possibility (of China and Pakistan opening fronts against India),” he warned.

There is a solution. India Most of the oil sands of Canada are located in three major deposits in northern Alberta. These are the Athabasca-Wabiskaw oil sands of north northeastern Alberta, the Cold Lake deposits of east northeastern Alberta, and the Peace River deposits of northwestern Alberta. Between them they cover over 140,000 square kilometres (54,000 sq mi) - an area larger than England - and hold proven reserves of 1.75 trillion barrels (280×10^9 m3) of bitumen in place. ]

The tar sands are mined with giant excavators that have to remove the overburden to get at the deposits. The environmental concerns are therefore dire as the land and ecology recover much more slowly in this cold north than warmer climes. It is also mostly in unpopulated virgin land and therefore sensitive to human activiti

US experts said that China had doubled its nuclear and missile potential over the above-mentioned period. The modern-day nuclear forces of China are based on latest technologies and are capable of reaching such distant targets as Washington.

The DF-41 mobile missile system is expected to become the main attraction of the military parade in China. The new system, the CIA said, is capable of hitting targets at a distance of up to 13,000 kilometers. It will be extremely hard to intercept Chinese ballistic missiles topped with ten dispensing warheads.

China will also unveil the ground-based CSS-X-10 and the sea-based JL-2 missiles during the parade on October 1. The new Dong Hai 10 (DH-10) cruise missile is also interesting: it is developed on the base of the nuclear-capable Soviet X-55 cruise missile. The last war with China was in 1962 where the Chinese gave the Bharatis a huge drubbing. There have been border violation and firing across the border in South Tibet (aka Arunchal Pradesh in Bharat and in the Aksai Chin area of China. Aksia Chin was a border area between Pakistan and China. Pakistan resolved the border by giving CHina 5000 square miles of Aksia Chin to Beijing. This allowed China to build land roads to Tibet and consolidate its national sovereignty.

It is because of the British art of "Divide and Rule" that India was partitioned into two countries, Pakistan and India. On the Congress Party side, it was the old horses, who were tired of fighting for Independence, decided to get whatever is possible and the Mountbatten and his wife, made it possible to sell the plan of dividing the country. Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan, the tallest leader of the NWFP, Moulana Abul Kalam Azad and many others, including Gandhiji, supported the idea of NOT dividing the country. If India had not been partitioned, ours will be perhaps the most powerful nation in the world and the poorest of the poor, in both countries, will have benefited. While in India, it is politicians who are most powerful, but, unfortunately, in Pakistan BOTH THE politicians and the Army Generals are the most corrupt and enjoy all the wealth in that country and all the foreign aid that flows from abroad. Even now, it is not TOO LATE for the two countries to be united as a Federation.

What we should have done is to complete the partition and send all the muslims across the border. Islam is an acid that corrodes the vessel that holds it and Muslims are doing the same to India (Ask any country that has a muslim minority, they are only trouble).

hello - I'm a Pakistani - I've lived most of my life aboard - i've even spent a lot of time in India. One thing that seems to be amiss in this article is its lack of evident fact. Before we start ripping on each other I think its important to understand that this article is written by an amateur in an amateur newspaper.

Just to set something straight - India and Pakistan both have their own domestic problems which are completely neglected in this fear of attack from each other. Lets make one thing clear, Islamism is different to Pakistan and it a dam shame that the two are now so synonymous. Though Pakistan is as at fault for allowing this to happen, it must be made clear that Taliban, and these extremists are not Pakistani they are Afghani or are northern fortiers men that live in the disputed no man's zone, where is un-policed by the pakistani government. There is no legal border between Afghanistan and Pakistan, the Duran Line contracted expired a long time ago.

This sounds like a propaganda article. China has no rights over either Tibet, the area of Arunachal Pradesh in north east India or the portion of Kashmir it forcibly occupies. Tibet has been an independent region for thousands of years until the Chinese invaded and occupied it. As for China's false claim on Aurnachal Pradesh, it officially and legally became part of India as per an agreement with a free Tibetan government and the British India. No Tibetan including the Dalai Lama has ever challenged this agreement. In fact, the Dalai Lama has categorically stated that Arunachal/Tawang is part of India. I think the Chinese should vacate Tibet and East Turkistan (Xinjiang) where they oppress the native people and destroys their native culture. China has been an aggressive expansionist power and has disputed with all its neighbors- India, Khazakastan, Vietnam, Burma, Japan, Cambodia, Thailand, Korea, Mongolia and Russia. China is trying to destabilize all its neighbors.

Which is why it is so important to make a distinction between Pakistani's and Terrorists. We don't take care of our own people, they will turn to those that will help them - even if they are misguided and used and that's the reality of the situation.

India is as at fault for fueling this instability and that is why events like the Bombay Bombings occur. Why does India have 17 consulates on the border of Afghanistan and Pakistan? Again we can only speculate but I think the picture is clear.

Its about time there is new leadership in both the countries and this useless and unproductive animosity between the two come to an end.

Its evident that there is so much insurgency in Pakistan that people are lashing out on all foreigners - misguided and heavily funded. If Chinese workers can be attacked and named infidels, the very essence of Islam which is about peace and acceptance is lost. So let us not confuse Islam, Radical Islamism and Pakistani's.
