Sometimes it is quite hard to keep track of all the draft picks from all 32 NFL teams. Sometimes we (mostly I) tend to forget about certain players especially when they play for the Seattle Seahawks.
This of course brings me to the 11th pick in the 2003 NFL draft, CB Marcus Trufant. When I sat down to go over all the first round picks in 2003 he seemed to be the player I knew the least about. Thanks god for the internet, and pro football reference.com. Now I can judge this draft pick by the numbers he has put up.
When we talk about shut down NFL corners, Trufant might not be the first name we come up with. However his impact on the league and team have certainly been felt. QB’s now days tend to not throw to his side of the field.
In six NFL seasons he has racked up over 500 tackles, and 19 interceptions. Heading in the 2010 season that means he averages a little north of 84 tackles per year and at least three interceptions each season. Those are very impressive numbers.
This should not be a big surprise as Trufant was a Four Year starter at the University of Washington, and was a member of their 2003 Rose Bowl team. He secured his status as a first round draft pick by not allowing a single TD to his side of the field over his final two College Football seasons.
When a team takes a guy with the 11th overall pick they are expecting him to come in and make an impact. Trufant certainly did that racking up 83 tackles his rookie year.
He was named to the Pro Bowl in 2007, and was also an AP First Team All NFL that year. This is all we can expect from a guy taken in the top half of the first round, and we must give this pick a seven year grade of an A. The simple fact there is he is still on the field producing, even though he did miss six games in 2009.
