Honor killings in Islam?

Faleh Hassan Almaleki

  Noor Almaleki

A new article in USA Today raises a big flag by surfacing a growing phenomenon of honor killings among Muslim male immigrants in this country. This comes amid news in November of an Iraqi immigrant in Arizona who killed his daughter for having become “too westernized.”

Faleh Hassan Almaleki, 48, is accused of running over his daughter, 20-year-old Noor Almaleki, with his car because she brought dishonor upon the family by reportedly marrying a man in Iraq and then returning to Arizona to live with her boyfriend and his mother.

Honor killings are generally defined as murders of women by relatives who claim the victim brought shame to the family. This certainly is not limited to “Islamic” countries, as this even occurs in countries like Brazil, Ecuador, Israel, Italy and Sweden. Yet, the occurrences of honor killings in the US have been largely committed by immigrants who are Muslims.

Where do these families get such an outrageous idea to murder their own flesh-and-blood for bringing shame and dishonor to the family? Is it steeped in their native culture? Is it advocated by their faith?

Unfortunately many people are blaming the religion of Islam for the existence of such a barbaric custom. “There is broad support and acceptance of this idea in Islam, and we're going to see it more and more in the United States," says Robert Spencer, founder of Jihad Watch and prominent antagonist of Islam.

This unfair and false statement not only exhibits Mr. Spencer’s bias against Islam but also exposes his lack of knowledge about this faith.

There is absolutely nothing in Islamic literature or jurisprudence that advocates, sanctions or even allows honor killings. Islam protects the sanctity of human life and abhors any attempt to take the life of an innocent person. The Holy Quran teaches that whoever intentionally kills another will be punished by God because the killing of one person is equated to killing all mankind.

What becomes increasingly frustrating for practicing Muslims like myself, then, is hearing about Muslim men who kill wives, sisters and/or mothers who have brought shame and dishonor to the family. This epidemic cannot be ignored and must be tackled.

Amnesty International once reported a case in which a husband murdered his wife based on a dream that she had betrayed him. Elsewhere, a young woman's throat was slit in the town square because a love song had been dedicated to her over the radio. In another case, a 16-year-old mentally retarded girl was raped and then turned over to her tribe's judicial council. Even though the crime was reported to the police and the man was arrested, the tribesmen council declared she had brought shame to her tribe, and she was killed in front of a tribal gathering.

This is disgusting.

Muslims across the world must unite to end such atrocities that have absolutely no basis in Islam. We must work to eradicate this ancient cultural custom from any society still plagued with it. It is a Muslim’s duty to uphold peace and tolerance, and any cries from hate mongers, like Robert Spencer, claiming that Islam supports and accepts this practice are ignorant at best and dishonest at worst.

People like Faleh Hassan Almaleki deserve a stiff punishment for murder. Their acts of savagery are almost always coupled with defiant pride and no remorse at all. Such acts demonstrate a complete lack of faith in God. If these men had any faith in God, they would not take matters into their own hands. The Holy Quran makes this clear and says “Verily, the most honorable among you, in the sight of Allah, is he who is the most righteous among you” (49:14).

These ignorant people are not serving their faith. They tarnish the image of Islam by only serving themselves in this vile manner. It is my hope that these ignorant people learn how their faith has warned against such acts of cruelty and that the world at large understands that we Muslims are just as repulsed by these actions as they are.

The incident reminds me of pre-Islamic time when Arabs before the advent of Muhammad (pbuh) used to kill their daughters and called it honor killings.

I don't understand how do they justify themselves with the sayings of prophet Muhammad (pbuh) who assured heaven for a father who takes care of his daughters. One of Muhammad's companions once told him how he killed his daughter as an honor killing before becoming a Muslim. He had not finished his narration yet that prophet Muhammad (pbuh) had a stream of tears trickling down from his cheeks and asked him to please stop. He further said: "One who doesn't show mercy will not be shown mercy".

Imran, thank you for your words, which are a great reminder of the true message that was preached by the prophet of Islam. Indeed, he said that whoever takes care of his daughter will find be rewarded with heaven. It is sad that some Muslims forget this teaching, but it is re-assuring to see Muslims like yourself who not only understand but advocate the true teachings of Islam.

Hopefully, with time, we can convince people that statements like those made by Chris King and Allan Erickson are not true about Islam.

  • University Student- Canada 2 years ago

Yes I do dare to disagree.

Number 1: 99%- really, do provide citations. We live in an educated world, and the only way any statistic has any value is if it comes from a credited, impartial and researched source. Otherwise its useless.

Number 2: Just b/c the majority of terrorist activities shown on the news are said to be done by muslims, does NOT mean that those are the only ones. There are terrorist activities being carried out daily all over the world by underground criminal organizations ie. the mafia, gangs and triads. Just b/c the media doesn't report them, doesn't mean they aren't happening.

Number 3: Saudi Arabia claims to use Islamic laws- BUT if you know anything about Islam, you'll see that their laws are actually very UN-ISLAMIC. They use the name of Islam to carry out their own political agendas and to control the people.

Number 4: Men who perform 'honour killings' go against Islam. It is PRIDE not Islam that is the cause of this cruelty

While honor killings may not be Muhammed's idea, it is clearly associated with Islam. Jesus would not approve of Republican red neck wing nuts, but they still call themselves Xians.

Religion is the problem, it doesn't matter which one, they are all equally bad, equally false.

  • University Student- Canada 2 years ago

Number 5: just b/c the terrorists claim to be muslims, does NOT mean that they are doing what muslims should. When a Christian commits a murder, do we blame Christianity? NO, we don't.

Similarly, just b/c a psycho fanatic says he's muslim, does NOT mean that its b/c he's muslim, or that Islam should be blamed.

Number 6: We all come from different faiths and backgrounds. Thus it is essential that we educate ourselves about other's religions, so that we can make informed and educated decisions concerning events in the world; and not jump to conclusions that may be completely off.

As I said earlier, NO- honour killings are NOT Islamic.

They are a result of MALE EGO's- their inability to deal with anyone going against them. IT IS PRIDE, lack of SELF-ESTEEM, and inability to deal with insubordination that leads to these heinious crimes. These men FEAR what their families and friends will say if their children do not obey them.

It is NOT religion that is the problem, but SOCIETY that is the cause. people are always so desperate to appear in a goodlight in front of friends, family and strangers--that the fear of not looking good causes them to go through with foolish, rash and horrid acts ie. honour killings.

Answer to #1 - Google it.

Answer to #2 - Gang on Gang violence is not considered Terrorism. When a mobster shoots another it does not fall in the category of terrorism. When a Person runs into a town square and blows up 50 civilians, that IS considered Terrorism.

Answer to #3 - Wahhabism is a sect attributed to Muhammad ibn Abd-al-Wahhab, an 18th century scholar from what is today Saudi Arabia. He advocated bringing Islam back to its roots by removing what he considered innovations in Islam (Bidah). He believed that those who practice innovation in Islam are Kafir (infidels)

The FBI reports 18,000 people are shot dead a year by gangs in America (which by the way is a majority Christian country). What's the response to that? Oh, they're not Christian? But what if they claim they are? Oh, still not? Hmmm, and yet you still say that a psycho who kills who claims he's Muslim, is a Muslim. Double standard my friend.

And let's not forget abortion clinics being blown up. Christian terrorist marches into church and shoots abortion doctor in the face. Yup, just happened a few weeks ago. "Google it"
Over the last decade there have been dozens murdered, hundreds of clinics blown up, and thousands of doctors attacked and beaten to a bloody pulp - all by Christian fundamentalists - all in America. Don't beleive me? "Google it"

Point is, do your research from Muslims who actually practice Islam, not haters who only seek to cause discord. Peace

According to footnote research at Wikipedia, 650,000 Africans were brought to America between the 16th and 19th centuries. In 1860 the population had grown to 4 million according to the census.

Does anyone really believe two million were killed or died of abuse as Love4all insists? Slaves were valuable, not expendable.

Research indicates no one knows how many people were killed during the Inquisition. Some estimates put the number at 2,000, others say 30,000. The Inquisition lasted 300 years, and had nothing to do with the teachings of Christ.

The tragedy of the Native Americans was death by disease which few understood at the time, and was certainly not genocide via bio-weapon. Absolutely no evidence to support that assertion.

WWII deaths blamed on Christians? You must be kidding...

What of those smallpox-infested blankets that have received so much press? Medved examines the evidence and concludes “The endlessly recycled charges of biological warfare rest solely on controversial interpretations of two unconnected and inconclusive incidents 74 years apart.”

The first was in response to Pontiac’s Rebellion (1763), a ferocious small war undertaken by the Great Lakes Indians (who had been allied with the defeated French in the French and Indian War) against British settlements. The Ottawa leader Pontiac told his followers to “exterminate” the whites. They did their best. Hundreds of settlers were tortured, scalped, cannibalized, dismembered, or burned at the stake. As the Indians were besieging Fort Pitt, Field Marshal Lord Jeffery Amherst wrote to a subordinate, “Could it not be contrived to send the Small Pox among the disaffected tribes of Indians?” But nothing seems to have come from this correspondence.

The other episode is alleged by fired professor Ward Churchill (yes, the one who invented his Creek and Muscogee heritage and fabricated his academic research), and concerns an outbreak of smallpox among the Mandan tribe in 1837. There is no evidence that the whites intentionally infected the Indians in that case, and considerable evidence that the settlers attempted to prevent the outbreak.

There were terrible injustices and massacres committed by Europeans against Native Americans and some running the other way as well. The more technologically advanced civilization prevailed — which is the usual course in human affairs. But the current fashion to distort that history into something like a war crime is, to say the least, overstated.

I do find it unfortunate that people like "skep" and "Greg" seem to have nothing but distrust for Muslims...all Muslims...even myself. Any statement made by someone like Robert Spencer, who has nothing but hatred for Islam and Muslims, is taken as true fact. But any statement made by a genuine Muslim, who has actually studied his faith and can speak for the teachings of Islam, is taken as either uninformed or a lie.

I sincerely hope that there is some way in which skep and Greg can find trust in Muslims like myself who have nothing to hide. I speak out against Muslims who behave in a manner contrary to the true teachings of Islam. I have spent almost 15 years studying this faith and know that there is nothing in Islam that sanctions the type of behavior that you abhor. That is not a lie...it is the truth.

And as a university student, those are the only resources that may be said to be valid; and from whose contents a statistical piece of data may be considered creditable.

I have read too many research papers, and the articles written on them for the average public, to trust statistics found in articles anymore. They tend to cut out many important parts that they deem 'too uninteresting' to the average person. Only 'juicy' if somewhat inaccurate stats are included in articles. They will include "67% of the cows in the county were deemed unhealthy" but they will exclude that perhaps only 5 out of the 20 farms in the county had been sampled (had data collected from them). And thus, that the percentage applies on to those 5 farms, not to the entire county.
