Killa Cal takes his talents to Rare Essence

Earlier this month, Killa Cal, one of the best go-go rappers in the game and a long time member of the What Band, declared himself a free agent. Cal's decision to leave the What Band was surprising, and speculation about what he would do next sparked pointed conversations on Facebook, Twitter, and across the DMV blogosphere.

"Is he going back to the What Band? Will he join the Backyard Band? Will he become a go-go mercenary and float from band to band (see: Little Benny)? Or will he abandon go-go completely and simply be a full time rapper?"

When the smoke cleared, the questions were answered in spectacular fashion when Killa Cal stepped on stage with Rare Essence, and immediately began performing in front of sold-out venues.

ST: You've had a lot of people talking recently. Do you want to address the situation with the What Band?

KC: No problem, a couple of things contributed to me leaving. I don't think we were on the same page as far as goals, and I feel like communication could have been a lot better. I just felt like it was time to move on. And luckily I was blessed with some major offers as far as bands. Of course in the end I chose RE (Rare Essence).

ST: At this point in your career do you consider yourself a go-go or hip-hop artist?

KC: I would say both. My material has been on national projects, and I have written for national artists. And locally my resume speaks for itself.

ST: What do you think about the current state of the go-go industry?

KC: I think the state of go-go is OK, but it can always be better. I'm never content. I think it needs to catch up with the marketing of hip-hop and one day become a national brand. Egos and greed play a major part in why we haven't gotten there yet, but things can always change. People say the lack of originality (is a problem), but if the fans aren't supporting your originals it puts you in a difficult spot.

ST: OK, let's talk about hip-hop: many local musicians complain about the lack of resources in the DMV (A&R's, record companies) etc. What do you feel about that? Are their complaints valid?

KC: I think those complaints are valid, but with the way the game has changed - mostly due to the internet - you can be heard and discovered. You just have to put in the work. To me, it's all on what your goals are as an artist and what your lifestyle permits you to do.

ST: Who are some of the local artists you want to collaborate with (I'm referring to artists that you haven't worked with previously)?

KC: I've already worked with so many. I would say Boobe (Oy Boyz), Fatz Da Big Fella, and Gerreddi.

ST: What plans or projects are you working on for 2012?

KC: My plans are to push harder than I did last year. I covered a lot of ground with all the mixtapes and music videos, so I'm just trying to keep pushing and making things happen - especially with my ghostwriting company "The Rhymesolvers Unit". I also want to make a large contribution to Rare Essence. I think I was a missing piece to their puzzle and hopefully I can continue on with their legacy of hits and success.

ST: Thank you for your time, I realize this has been a busy month for you. Do you have any last comments?

KC: I just wanna give a shout out to all the supporters, Noisemaker Nation, Rare Essence, and my family for understanding and supporting what I'm trying to do. I just want to make history. When it's all said and done, I want people to be able to say Killa Cal is hard working, humble, and one of the best to ever do it!!
